I searched in the archives and couldn't find an answer....... So I got this thing with a tube axle and I want to put discs on it. I was told they are '49-54 Chevy spindles but from what I've seen, the bolt pattern to the backing plate is different. I have seen the Speedway kit and they say the spindles must be machined to work with their kit. I don't have a problem with that if I have to but is there another way? The passenger spindle seems to have had a flange machined off of it on the top. I need discs that will work with the tube axle. So are these '49-'54 car spindles? Truck spindles? Something else? Is there a disc conversion that will work with these? Thanks, Matt
Thanks, that means it is a '49-'54 car spindle. Now, what about a disc conversion. I know the 'Vetts used the same spindles until about '62, but will they work with that axle? Some kits use stock axles and some do not. I would like to find a kit that does not require the spindles to be machined. As for the brake hoses, that is the way I got it and I'm not going to use them anyways. I'm going to pull it all apart and paint/powder coat it all. Matt
This one says "no machining required". http://www.ecihotrodbrakes.com/early_chevy_discbrake_conversions.html
Thanks, but that looks like it is for a stock front end. I need one for a straight axle. Still looking. Matt
Huh???? Whether the spindle is still on a stock Chev front end or a straight axle won't matter; the kit fits the spindle....
Yep, you would think so. But it has to do with the axle or A-arm, steering arm type and clearance needed to turn. Here are the different Speedway brakes. This one is for tube axles and modified spindles. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Front...to-1949-54-Chevy-Spindle-5-on-4-3-4,2013.html The ECI ones are for stock front ends. http://www.ecihotrodbrakes.com/early_chevy_discbrake_conversions.html I just don't want to buy new spindles if I don't need to. I just know how much info the HAMB has out there and someone knows if it is possible. Matt
as a plus, you can call ECI, and speak to the owner ,Ralph, he will give you all the CORRECT info that you need.
But you can call Speedway and talk to a kid reading off an information card and probably has never even driven a rod, let alone built one.
Thanks for the ECI suggestion. I called and talked to them, Ralph wasn't there, but they hooked me up. I'll let you know how it is when it gets here. Thanks everyone. Matt
