Fellow HAMB’bers … Need Help! information on a “Magspark Conversion Distributer Kit”; I have a 6V Positive Ground, Mallory Magspark Transformer (Duel Coil) that I want to use in a 1940s inspired Flathead Powered Deuce. In the original Mallory instructions it states “there is a kit available for using it with a non- Magspark Mallory Distributor”. ... Could anybody help lead me in the right direction for the Kit & part # or the contents of it; or Knowledge or parts needed to perform that conversion? Thanks, Ric
I've been looking for a few days on this, but haven't dug out and speed catalogs showing this stuff yet. It seems wrong for the '40's period...this is a '50's-'60's improvisation of a sorta-dual coil, one coil with two primaries... Kits would fit only vertical type distributors. 1940's conversions would all have been hand crafted true dual coils, I would think...there were several known styles, with the converted LZ distributor being the only one I would think of as practical for anyone not a good machinest. Other conversions using big car dual coil rigs require lots of fabrication and many parts rarer and more costly than LZ...ever shell out $1,000 for a distributor cap? There are also ways to convert a 59A distributor to dual coil that would have been pretty easy in the days before the introduction of the Harmon Collins dual coil 1942 conversion, which I believe to be early 1950's in origin. I undoubtedly have some cataloging on the Mallory stuff, but who knows where...I live in a sort of bibliographic earthquake zone. (edit...with some research, I see this is the one that is apparently some sort of field polarity reverser, not the Mallory rig with one coil/two primaries. Both seem to have separate point circuits, not ovelap style as in the cl***ic Mallory/early Ford dual point system Can't think of name of the other Mallory rig. Both are out of your period in sales and visually, and really don't seem like an improvement over a '40's flathead Mallory system distributor, 11a or 21 a or 59 a. If you are thinking about converting a '49 type distributor, its fundamental advance problems kill more performance than any hypothetical hotter spark system can add...)

Bruce … I appreciate any help no matter the time frame, the Flathead I’m using for now is a fresh 8BA 276 C.I. so I’ll suffer along with an upright Distributer for now, I just want to get this 32 on the road, as I’ve had it for 40 yrs. The date on the paper work is June 54 but didn’t know how far back the Magspark was first used. The theme is the 40s and everything has to be 6V; but bolt on parts can be changed as opportunity allows. For now I just want to keep it a simple upgrade from stock. I have a Crab & Timing Cover that I would like to use, but a whole 59A is the ultimate plan. “Bibliographic” (had to look that one up) earthquake zone, sounds like home. I’m a wiring dunce so I’ll have to bone up on terminology, I’ll scan some of the paper wk that does a good job explaining the circuits. Thanks, Ric
I did some looking around...I think the magspark is circa 1954 intro, but that was from implication and not clear info. HRM used one on the first hop-up of a '54 OHV Ford, and the article strongly suggested that it was new. I'd look for an early mallory '49 distributor for sure. I believe you could swap in plate from about any mallory Magspark. Only pic I found of a stock MS conversion showed a ball-bearing Mallory plate, so obviously not Loadamatic. Im sure I have cataloging on all this stuff, but I don't know which cat it's under right now... An 8BA can be made to look like a 59 pretty convincingly, but of course a cam swap is needed, a real wart if you are not doing a rebuild anyway.
… Now I know what’s needed (Mallory part # 25070) thanks to HAMB member ‘solidaxle’ who helped out. Any buddy know where I can get Mallory Kit part # 25070? - but if need be I can get away with just the Mallory 6V Condenser (part # 24125-A), there should be a number # 36 stamped on the bottom of it. Inc is a page from a Mallory Service Manual; there’s nothing mysterious just another Condenser + pieces that can be subs***uted. Thanks, Ric
Start right here in the cl***ified parts for sale section. It is an absolute fountain of neat elderly speed stuff, and everything is priced so you don't have to battle insane millionaires as on Ebay.
Have you found what you're looking for yet? I have this. See pics Not sure if its complete or all you need. Vincent
Don't thank me, I'm just p***ing along the wealth of information on from others on this site. Sooo, when are we going to see this hidden away for 40 year deuce??
