From my experience, it was on the ID plate on the glove box door. My F-100 said 3.92 for the Dana 44 behind the straight six.

I'm not sure about '53-'55, but '56 F-100 ratios were 3:92, 4:09 and 4:27 to 1. There should be a tag on one of the rear end cover bolts.

  4. My 49 F-1 was 4.27

been told there are no tags on the diff and the glove box is missing/removed from the truck! (the axle has actually been removed from the truck and the truck has been sold on, i think) ive seen a picture of the axle and it looks to be a dana 44 unit.. if i remove the cover will there be markings on the crown wheel to id the ratio if i go to view it? or can you turn the drum and count the drive flange to work out the ratio roughly (does that even work?)

Easy to check, just mark the wheels (or drums or axles) with chalk and turn the pinion or the wheels and do some counting. The axles have to both turn together because of the differential, that is the only issue. Count the number of pinion turns for one complete turn of the axle/wheels. You will end up with some fraction like 3 1/4 or 3 3/4 or 4 1/8. You can guess the closest known ration from there if you are carful when you count the turns.

no tags on the axle had to pull the diff cover off in the end to count the teeth.. 47 on the crown wheel, 12 on the pinion = 3.916 which is what i was hoping it was.. result! thanks all
