If you're a g***er fan you've probably seen some of these amazing photos by Wayne Arteaga before, but over the years they have gotten separated and mislabeled. We've brought all the photos together, and now we are fortunate to have additional photos and expert commentary by John Hellmuth, Wayne's racing partner and the last man alive who was present. We hit the jackpot, you could say. KS Pittman, Stone, Woods, and Cook, and Arteaga and Hellmuth -- all in one place for one day. This is a magical time in drag racing that can never be repeated, but these photos capture it perfectly. The Cl***ic G***er Photos of Wayne Arteaga | Mac's Motor City Garage.com
i took this photo at a local car show in about '62--saw it run at mid-america and alton. the poster says best et 11.50 and 125 mph. wayne was a familiar figure in st. louis. he had a v-6 powered willys pickup that was his daily driver, and i seem to recall that he built a willys for his daughter.
I had the privilege to interview him for a few magazine projects and he was just a wonderful guy. Much loved.
Thanks to John for his contributions to this post. Although Wayne was the professional photographer, John Hellmuth has a photo collection of drag racing and bonneville that could fill pages. Perhaps he will tease us with some in the future. Wayne and his succession of cars is a story in itself from his 41 Plymouth, Potvin blown Olds engined Henery J, 33 Ford 3 window, and series of Willys g***ers and street rods. He infected many of us mush heads with the desire to duplicate his feats. He was a good friend and inspiration. deChrome
Great pics and info to go along with them. These were some of the most interesting people in drag racing! Can you imagine hanging out at waynes shop back then? WOW!!!
