I have a 36 Ford coupe with stock rear wishbone and axle etc and I'd like to change the stock "who dat" shocks to tube shocks. The brakes have been changed to '40 Ford juice so has '40 backing plates. Any ideas / thoughts/ kits out there? Thanks!
There have been bolt-on mounts available for those since the late forties. They are forged steel and bolt on to the rearend using the rear two bolts that attach the backing plate to the housing/ bell. They have a stud that the shock would go on. I just sold the set I had recently, or I would show you a picture. They are still available, and I see old pairs for sale here in the cl***ifieds sometimes. I known that Ch***is Engineering has the brackets that bolt on to the front side of your original rear crossmember for the top mount, but they are very simple and easy to make yourself .
I just did a quick search of the cl***ifieds here on the hamb and found a pair of the mounts for the rearend. I searched " banjo shock mounts" and there is an ad there from back in July with pictures. They are probably sold but at least You will see what I am talking about.
I have a pair of the Ch***is engineering upper mounts left over in my stash. Here's a picture of one and how it fits your crossmember. Weld it on or drill and bolt.
Thanks for all the help! I'll keep an eye out for these. I have the 36 wishbones and I read awhile back that there's a clearance / fit problem with these.
I just put a pair of purehotrods banjo shock mounts on my Dad's Model A a couple of months ago. They work great and are completely bolt on.
I had some. They were called Houdaille tube shock conversions. http://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91113
