I've been doing alot more searches on the web, and there is no mention of any steel fleetside boxes in 57. All of what I've found has been that the Cameo box was carried over in limited quanities into the 58 model year. Some suggest it was to use up the left over inventory of the Cameos as they did not sell all of them by the time 58 models came out. You say they had 3100 tags on the hood? When you say tag do you mean a small tin tag on the underside of the hood or do you mean an emblem on the outside? None of the info I have found shows or says anything about a number tag/emblem on the hood, they were all on the fenders. If your had a 3100 emblem on the hood, I'd say someone put it there, that it was not factory. The factory hood emble on the front of the hood did not have the 3100 designation in it..... I sure wish you had some pics of either of these trucks as it would be cool to see.

After more thought, the emblems were on the fenders, like the stepside versions. Guess I was thinking about a 51 I had with the emblems on the hood. Wish I had pics too.

CB_Chief The 58 I had was exactly like the one you described except mine had a 283 with three speed. Don't remember if the data plate had SPEC for paint code. I have an old pic of it somewhere and will post it if I can find it.

Hi Oldspert, What makes your '58 Apache a Special Edition?

    Thanks,

The paint scheme and body. Big back window, Fleetside bed, interior details, and as stated above the data plate says SPEC on the paint code. No longer have this one either.

I've got one of those "special" trucks. Also, in 58, there was the Apache, Viking, and Spartan.

There is an ongoing effore to have all of the "Apache" badges on these pickups replaced by a "Tolerance" badge.
Native American individuals, tribes and organizations have been questioning the use of the name and image for decades. Over 115 professional organizations representing civil rights, educational, athletic, and scientific experts have published resolutions or policies that state that the use of Native American names and/or symbols by non-native auto manufacturers is a harmful form of ethnic stereotyping that promote misunderstanding and prejudice which contributes to other problems faced by Native Americans. The Chevrolet Apache badge is only one example of the larger controversy.

Residents of the European region known as Scandinavia and the Greek city of Sparta have expressed their displeasure and have joined in a cl*** action lawsuit along with the Apache tribal coucil over the use of the names Apache, Spartan and Viking as part of the Chevrolet truck line starting in 1958. As part of a negotiated settlement GM has agreed to implement an exchange program in order remove the offensive badging from the public eye. Under this program the Chevrolet division of General Motors will accept, no questions asked, any badges diplaying the names "Viking", "Spartan" or "Apache" and will, in an even exchange, supply you with a Chevrolet Volt badge, for which they have an excess due to low public demand.

An official spokesperson for GM states that this exchange does not apply to trucks prior to the 1958 Model year nor any badges that do not display the names, Spartan, Viking or Apache. The GM official further states that trucks manufactured prior to the '58 model year are simply Task Force trucks, even if the truck came equipped with the rumored "super, super, super rare" Fleetside bed manufactured prior to the 1958 Model year.

An anonymous source inside GM stated that "the new Volt badges come with a label warning users that installation of the Chevy Volt badges on any vehicle may substantially increases the chances of a vehicle fire." The NTSB has declined to comment.

Since the start of the program GM has received no inquiries from vintage Chevrolet truck owners regarding the exchange and GM states they are considering offering to exchange an entire Chevy Volt for the offensive badges because "it appears no one else wants them", said the GM spokesperson, referring to the Volts.

A legal representative of the company that manufactures and markets Fleets Enemas stated that they are also considering taking legal action over the name "Fleetside" and are hoping to force GM to implement a similar program to exchange the Fleetside emblems for enemas. There was no mention of what would actually replace the Fleetside badging on the trucks, but the representative did state that their pre-packaged enema product also doubles as a radiator flush.

This is a cool book I picked up at Cracker Barrel of all places but has a ton of information on 55-59 Task Force trucks.

Talk about politically incorrect. I scored these task force doors for my truck.......they were so cool I ended up hanging them up in the shop

Why, just this morning I saw a "Caucasian Freightliner" semi tractor on the highway...

    What's this world coming to?:)

Love the Task Force trucks. First car was a '58 Apache 31 1/2 ton. Really need to get another one.

Looking to acquire a 1959 Apache in the near future. There is one here in town that I thought I would post a picture of for you guys... it gives me great motivation.

There's the remains of one of these in a junkyard west of Canton ILL. At least there was about 3 years ago. I got the 4 speed Hydro out of it. Didn't know it was a "Special Edition". Just thought that it was a really fancy truck when new.....A demonstrator for a Chevy dealer.
