P***ing down a love of this hobby is a great thing to do for your son. We need younger folks to carry the torch. Yet, make sure that you p*** on safety measures, too, like chocking the wheels, setting a parking brake if possible, using quality jack stands of proper tonnage, placing the jack stands so that they will properly support the car, and never get underneath of it using only a jack of any kind. Best wishes on your build. I always liked the design of a '60 Olds.

I am going to ***ume you are taking all the safety precautions ;) and just comment that it is cool that you have him involved! Nothing like father and son time working on old cars.

I remember the first car that I helped my Father with. It was a 1952 Chevrolet and my Father showed me how to put in the pushrods. Good memories !

COGRATS ON YOUR SONS INTEREST IN AN OLD CAR I STARTED MY SON WORKING ON OLD CARS WHEN HE WAS 12 AND NOW HE DOESNT WANT ME TO TOUCH ANY OF OUR CARS AS I WILL F IT UP

  7. About 30 plus years ago my son came under my '73 Caprice to watch me add differential fluid to it.
When he crawled out he whacked his forehead leaving a nasty gash on it.
He was mad, my wife was furious over my encouraging him to get into it with me ,and I never encouraged him again.
I figured he'd decide himself next time if he had any interest in this car thing.
He has no interest in cars to this day.
You can encourage them........but you can't force them.

My youngest son and I have just looked at an OT muscle car this past Monday. I'm pretty happy cuz apparently "the acorn didn't fall too far from the tree". BTW it needs just about everything, and he's rearing to go.

I agree that they can't be forced into it. But they can be encouraged...My two ten-year-old boys already have their own projects...a 59 Biscayne 2-door sedan and a 52 Chevy pu and they are both planning their builds. ;)

Sharing time is what it is all about....most kids really do want to get involved, if allowed to help early on....it's really a fantastic way to share thoughts and ideas, and see if there is a 'spark' there for the hobby, and encourage it----my dad wasn't too helpful when I came of age; however,.... my grandfather crawled under my first car with me, because it wouldn't start, and told me "anything can be repaired" and bought me my first tool box!!!...and what a wonderful memory I cherish all these years later...our kids is what makes this whole car-thing extra-special..... that many in the modern-car scene don't have.:)

my first memories of working with dad, was STANDING on the floor of a car, '55 chevy i think, pumping the pedal so my dad could bleed them.
    "can i let go"
    "not yet"
    "okay pump!..............hold it!"
    thanks for that memory.

  17. It saddens me a bit that my son didn't want to follow me with this car thing, but I realize it's not for everyone.
Now I'm working on my 2 nephews kids. Both young, intelligent and highly impressionable.
The kids mother kind of pushes them away from my cars and me when we get together.
The kids love my cars, it's all they want to mess with when at my house.
Their mom just frowns over it. (She came from a bit of $$$$, nannies, house keeper, gardeners, privileged type.
She would probably prefer they spend their time with other relatives.
Might have something to do with the weekend I watched them while they traveled to some sail boat races and the 2 boys and I all got tattoos.
