I installed 11" disc in the front, keeping the stock rear drums and want to know what you guys are doing for boosters? Ive got a 50 Shoe' and want to put a good booster in it, got any suggestions? I would like to buy new. Thanks everyone in advanced.
I've got disc in the front and drum in the rear on my 50 and am using the original master cylinder. Been driving it for two years and no problems. I don't see any need to go with a power brake setup. Just having discs is a major improvement. I don't even have a proportioning valve. Just removed the residual valve from the rear of the original MC and that's it. Stops on a dime and gives change. Also using DOT 5 brake fluid. Just my opinion. John
Fred -- You probably already know, but JAMCO sells a DCMC w/ booster that bolts onto the frame rail at the stock location. http://www.jamcosuspension.com/products_suspension.html But, it ain't cheap. I just posted a similar question on the shoeboxford.com site a few weeks ago . . . I don't really care for the under-the-floor deal (I eventually want to 'bag my car and having a booster under the car just doesn't seem like a good idea) . Anyway, I wanted to see who had any luck with a universal swing pedal + DCMC + booster for mounting on the firewall. That thread is here: http://www.shoeboxford.com/members/forum/openthread.cfm?forum=1&ThreadID=7349 . . . . and one of the guys posted a photo of what he did here: http://www.shoeboxford.com/members/forum/openthread.cfm?forum=1&ThreadID=7369 . . . . here: http://www.shoeboxford.com/members/forum/openthread.cfm?forum=1&ThreadID=7370 . . . . and here: http://www.shoeboxford.com/members/forum/openthread.cfm?forum=1&ThreadID=7371 Hope this helps. Do me a favor and pm me on what you decide. Maybe I'll copy you. Also, Where you been hiding that car? I don't think I've seen it runnin' around Ventura Co. yet; although I don't get up to Ventura too often (I work in Westlake). --Sam
Jim from Jamco says the under-floor booster hangs about 1.5" under the bottom of the frame rail. I don't want to lose my transmission pan AND brakes at the same time I think a firewall booster looks like ****e. I am probably going to do discs on the front as part of a spindle-swap, but if I do go with power brakes, I'm looking to put the booster and canister in the trunk, where the battery is now too. Has anyone here done this (trunk mount)? Any advice or pics?
I received the Jamco kit today and was impressed with the quality of the components. I opted to stay away from the power brake booster for clearance reasons. Jim is a nice guy and will work with you in order to get you what you need. Try the trunk question out with him maybe. Good luck.
I can't believe it's been this long, but this weekend I bled the finished Jamco setup I installed. It is f'n cool!! Front power discs, rear drums, trunk mounted booster, firewall mounted reservoir. What I got from Jamco was: frame-mount dual M/C with fittings for a remote reservoir 11" front disc/ball-joint conversion kit brake pedal and h/w 1 general purpose booster with bracket fluid reservoir This was no bolt-on deal... every aspect of the brake/suspension install required modification/fabrication, but I got the under-car clearance I needed (tweaked the MC mount kind of like you did, Fred) without the ugly booster/brake pedal trashing the firewall and hanging under the dash. I'm waiting on some wheels before I can test it out, hopefully it all works as good as it looks.
