I Was Considering Running A 62 Dodge Steering Box. Ratio Is Suppossed To Be 24:1 And It Turns Almost 4 Turns On The Sterring Wheel Side And About 100 Degrees Out The Cowl. The Box Doesn't Have To Be Reversed Because The Shafts Turn Opposite. Try To Find Out Other Experiences With Running These Boxes. Spitshine
In my experiences, any box is as good as the next one, if it will fit where you want to hang it, it turns the correct direction, the arm will connect unobstructed to the steering, it will clear the exhaust, it ain't worn out(loose), and it's easy to make a u-joint connection.
I have one in a 65 dart and one in a 65 cuda. 24:1 is a lot of turning. You can rebuild them and change the ratio. I know 18:1 in available and wil be altering the cuda's box in the near future.
Thanks For The Info. The Box Is Cast Aluminum And Is Bigger Than A Corvair Box. I Was Trying To See If Anyone Had Put On Of These In An "a", "t", Or Early Pickup, And How It Worked Out The Cowl. Spitshine Benzine 440, Can You Get The Different Gearing Through Borgsen??
ive never used them in a rod, however i have one saved for just such a project one day. i just always liked they way they feel.
Does it look like this ? I'm using this one for cowl steering in my modified. It's from some kind of Mopar.
There are three ratios availble for the mopar manual box. 24:1 was standard 20:1 was available through mopar performance as an intermediate ratio for circle trackers 16:1 was the fast ratio box that was factory available, and I believe firm feel is making the sector and shaft to convert other boxes to fast ratio. Also the boxes are slightly different depending on what they came out of. The manual boxes in trucks, vans, B, and C bodies, and some hipo A-bodies use roller bearings. The rest use bushings. Externally the boxes are identical. There are also two different pitman shaft sizes. Pre 73 a-bodies had the small one and everything else had the large. Try to get the large one because then you have a choice of several different length pitman arms.
SPITSHINE I used the same box in the kookie car clone back in 70s and im gonna use the same one in the new car they work great yea a littel bigger than a corvare but a lot cheeper and you can adjust the angle of the sterring better hope that helps............
