Been a while since I could have some garage time but I made some progress today. Made a subfloor for the trunk to mount the battery box. Also started it up. Sounds okay but I think there is some unburned gas detonating in the exhaust. I have a pressure regulator set at 4 psi so I think it may just be too rich. After I letting it run for 5 minutes I revved the motor (not that much really) and a high pitched squeal started toward the front of the motor that remained during idle. I shut it off immediately. I don't think it is the belt and was worried a bearing near the front might not be getting lube. Any thoughts?

Around the block for a test drive before it goes to Bruce's Rod Shop for finishing school. Still a little sketchy with the brakes, tuning, cooling, linkages, and all the other little details that make a difference between a dangerous car and a safe and reliable hot rod. Feeling pretty good!

The coupe looks great, you've done very nice work. Always a good idea to have a professional look things over on a new build. I'm sure it will be a safe and reliable hot rod to enjoy for years!

Got the car back from Bruce's. Huge improvement! Drove it 13 miles home. Enjoyed every inch of that drive. Thanks to Mike and Dustin for all of the work!

Now that it's back in my garage I can get to the interior. First step is to frame up some wood for a foundation for some of the window trim and panels.

I made more progress today. I finished the wood framing in the interior and laid down some heat insulation material.

Cut and edged some carpet. Now trying to figure out how to do the upper rear panels. I'm thinking of using ASB for the curved transition in the corner, panel board for the rest.

Most of the panels are cut. Need to order the tweed that matches the seats to cover door panels and lower panels. Got the transition in the upper rear panel to work nicely with aluminum. Still scratching my head on how to do the headliner.

Thanks for posting that. The details in the photos on that site really help. I may redo the upper rear quarter panels now that I see how they did it.

I did the wood from scratch. I had seen a couple of pictures of wood kits and had a basic idea of how it would install. I started at the rear quarters and framed my way to the rear center. I used poplar and a pocket jig to do all the joining. It's in there pretty solid.

  12. I did notice the pocket jig, did you also wood glue it? I use the pocket jig on a lot wood projects, but glue it as a backup.
Please keep updating as i will be looking at your build as inspiration for my wifes '33 sedan.

The headliner has consumed my time for the last three days. I ended up using a piece of chip board to mount the headliner. I made a pattern from paper and transferred it to the chipboard. It took about five fittings to get the chipboard to fit correctly. My first attempt at upholstering the headliner failed because the contact cement bled through. The second attempt worked much better when I used a different backing material. All in all it looks fine for my first attempt. I'm going to make up some by button heads to cover up the mounting screws.

More trim panels are going in. Decided to use chip board to make these panels since it was easier to trim and they mount nicely to the underlying panel board with clips. Using Weldwood contact cement brushed on from a can to attach the material. Just a couple of small gaps to nitpick over but still really pleased with the results. More interior panels in today. One more rear panel and I can get the seat back in. Then on to the door panels.

Nearly done with the interior. Just waiting on door handles and the rear glass. Made up the shifter/brake boot this morning. Pretty pleased with how it all turned out considering my experience and not having a template so I'm not too concerned about a couple of little issues.

Two years ago when the hot rod was in pieces I set a goal to be able to drive the hot rod to my first day at work at our new facilities. Well, on Monday I was able to drive the Plymouth to work and had a very nice cruise.

I still have several details that need to be worked out but I guess there were always be details. I'm very happy with how the car is turning out. The next big step is to get the hood top finished and installed.

Thanks for the kind words. It's been a lot of fun taking it out for some short cruises lately. Getting a lot looks and plenty of nice comments where ever it goes. Maybe I can finally get it to the Roundup this year!

real impressed with the homebuilt interior, looks great. my friend had a 34 Plym sedan in the 70s' that has inspired the 40 Ford I am building. The Plym was black with red/wht tuck & roll with chrome wheels. the soft top was white with a red diamond. 427-435hp, tri-power, 4-speed. the car now belongs to a member of my street rod club, but been re-done with sbc, chopped top, & different paint.

Thanks for the update. Great job. I used some of your ideas on the 34 dodge coupe I am building. You can see the build thread here on Hamb

Nice day for a cruise! Went about 25 miles of easy driving which is the longest drive yet. The Plymouth is behaving pretty well except I think I have an exhaust leak on the passenger side exhaust manifold. I can hear some popping on the right side when cruising just above idle. I'm going to loosen the bolts and check it out.
