Was wondering what the 3/8 threaded hole just under the oil dip stick on the drivers side is for. It is only approx. 1 inch deep
Also, what lower bracket is used for Alternator if using headers.
    Thanks for any suggestions

  2. That hole of for the Z-Bar ball if I am not mistaken.

if you are running an alt and headers you buy a bracket for and alt with headers. Any catalog speed shop should have one, it bolts around the front header tube with the header bolts. Then you use the arched top mount that bolts to a water pump stud.

By lower bracket, do you mean something that bolts to the front engine mount?

It's threaded for the 1/2" thread pivot ball, for the Z bar.

I was wondering what you meant by 3/8" hole, I don't remember a 3/8" hole there.

The alternator bracket can be the ****py one that you can buy

  5. Jim I believe you are right that should be a 1/2 inch hole. But measuring it with a tape it could appear to be 3/8 because of the thread depth.

Thanks for the help. I will check Speedway for the brackets. As for the threaded hole, I have two 283 engines. One is a 58-62 (3756519) (p***/corvette ??) and the other is a 57-66 (3849852)FOI24D, (chevelle/truck ??)
I am working with the 57-66 which has two threaded holes, one just under the oil dip stick tube and the other at the end of the engine where the bell housing bolts up. I had placed the Z Bar stud in the aft most hole, then noticed the one under the dip stick. I checked the 58 - 62 and it only has one hole, near the dip stick which I am sure is for the stud. I guess this 57-66 just has two locations for the stud. Thanx for the help again.

  9. The later engines had one near the bell housing/oil filter. I am guessing that the earlier engines may have had two for different configurations say vette, station wagon, truck? That is just a guess on my part

I looked at a 58 engine, only one hole, just below the dipstick

I am using the later engine so I will have two locations to mount the Z Bar. The engine is going into a 55 but it is on a 76 chevelle frame, so I have to make a mount for the Z bar. I just had never seen two holes in a block and just did not feel right plugging it unless I knew what it was for. Thanks again for the help.
