Got a split manifold for my bone stock 230, that will get 2 monojets on an Offy intake. '63 BelAir wagon w/ powerglide. Was planning to run 2 very short (12"?) glasspacks & either run both pipes next to each other out in front of the rear wheel, or all the way out the back. Questions are: 1) would it sound better to run a pipe out each side under the rear bumper, like true duals, or do you lose some of that cool split sound if exiting side-by-side? & 2) I don't really want it to be too loud, so am I asking for trouble with those short mufflers? What are you running & what do you suggest?
I have a feeling ,it's going to be loud either way. But hay, isn't that what split 6 manifold is all about? ! Have Fun
A stock 230" isn't going to be loud-loud even with two glasspack mufflers, however, 12" aren't long enough to be worth the trouble. If you want to run them side-by-side, consider using these: http://www.classicchambered.com/ jack vines
^^ That was what I was thinking, that it probably wouldn't be crazy loud anyway. It's been a long time since I had a straight 6, & a little quieter sounds better when you get older. I already have the two new short mufflers, so just thought I'd use them. I'm sure it would be quieter to run them full length, but this has air ride & exhaust pipe space will be at a premium. Plus, I'm just curious as to the sound difference in side-by-side as opposed to one exiting on each side.
One of my fondest memories from when I was about 16 years old was when Fuzzy Tobias rolled into town with a '38 Chevy with 6 engine, split manifold and side by side duals out the back. that was the first time I had seen side by side pipes. What a neat sound. A bit loud.....I have no idea what, if any, mufflers were included, but Man!, I was envious of the exhaust note. Years later, I bought a sweet little '53 Plymouth Belvedere hardtop with a split and duals, one out each side at the rear, which looked nice, but I don't think changes the sound compared to side by side, rear exit. I do think having them exit on either side of the car, at the wheel, will produce a very different effect. But whatever you decide on that, I'm betting the exhaust sound at the upshift of the Powerglide, especially on moderate acceleration, will be very satisfying to the ears. Ray
I am considering the same for my straight six. I tried a 17" glasspack on stock exhaust (at the rear) and stock manifold and it sounded horrible. I put the stock muffler back on for now. Considering just putting a flowmaster on with split exhaust. I am wanting a mild throaty grumble on acceleration. Not loud and obnoxius.
Well cool is in the ear of the beholder and they won't sound a lot different side by side or spread apart @ the rear bumper.
I've seen guys run one w a glasspack and one without on those inlines and they sounded great. Splitting the pipes apart shouldn't really effect the sound.
If any of you have heard my '40, I have these on my 292. They have the sound that is classic inline power!
I am running Fentons with no mufflers on my 261 Chev. 6 exiting just a head of the rear wheels on a 53 Chevrolet car. The only time it is really loud is when I stand on it. The engine is- .60 over Flat top pistons Isky cam- 254 deg. .481 lift
