I have a pair of new Traction Masters that came painted black. But if I remember right in the '60s they were painted gold. Am I right or wrong?
Mine on my '69' Camaro were yellow I believe. I think they were Mr. Gasket brand. Also I found these on the web:
I have an original set on my 50 dodge gasser .The brackets were gold and the bar silver with a sticker with their logo on the bar.
Yellow or orange were the most common off the shelf color for most slapper bars. It may depend on what run the bars were if they were gold or not.
Lakewoods were yellow and were the ones to get as I think they were the first with the "J" bolts for added strength, early 70's..Were on a friend's 66 F'lane and in the early 70's it was rare to see a street car pick the left front wheel for a short bit with 8" slicks... ..
D.Conrad is talking about and I hate to use this term OLDSCHOOL traction bars from the late 50,s they were round with eyes on the ends. a bracket bolted to the leaf spring plate. front had a short bracket you welded to the frame at the front leaf spring mount.they werw silver color with gold brackets.the slaper bars came out in the late 60,s
If my memory works correctly "Traction Masters" was a brand name for a single bar that attached to a plate under the leaf spring pack and went forward to a bracket attached to the side of the frame. Traction bars would cover that and other devices.
You're right, it was a particular brand, we sold a lot of them at Blair's, and most were painted black
On NOS Traction Masters, I've seen either black or silver painted bars; both with gold painted front and rear mounting plates.
Some how I missed that they were Traction Master brand I guess I looked at the pic of the slapper bars and went off on a tangent. yes the type of traction bars that were "Traction Masters" I am pretty sure were black, at least the ones that I found cheap once that were billed as "traction masters" were beat up and black, enough chips in the paint that you could see that they were never a different color. I probably painted them fluorescent orange by the way because that would have been in my bolt it on and make sure everyone knows you got it phase.
That was the deal around here too. Slappers were usually white or yellow for the most part. The only set of Traction Masters I'm familiar with are on my buddy's '65 GT-350 (owned since '66), they're black.
Not sure why we have two (recent) threads on Traction Masters but here is what I sent to the other one. Never seen any color but black, I think the "gold seal" referred to the decal they put on them.
Those traction masters work best with a spring that is pretty flat..I built a set for my 65 Comet and the stock springs had too much arc and the spring would flex just like in the ad showing with out the bars, pivoting at the rear bar pivot under the u-bolt pad..
Let me be the first to say NICE Fairlane. I remember seeing an NOS pair of Traction Masters at a swapmeet and they were black with a gold/bronze brackets.
Josh: At Hershey couple years ago? Northeast corner of the lot in front of the Giant center...new in the box, guy had them a couple years; for Mustang...I think?
What I remember from 1963-65, all of the Traction Masters that were mounted on my/friends cars had the black round tube. I don't recall the plates on the ends being a different color. They did have a sticker, but I don't recall the color. They didn't make the car ride rough, but were amazing on the instant traction with an open differential. The slappers never worked as well or had as good of a ride for me.
