The flat panel just behind the bumper and below the grill on my 53 is painted silver, looks original, would that have been body colour or is silver correct?

Those panels were never painted body color. Also, when I pulled the 6cyl engine out of my 53 over 40 years ago for a repaint I found the bellhousing color was a perfect match for the orange on a 283 Chevy engine!

I believe my 53 is glacier blue and looking at the pic I took when I bought the car, it looks grey (overlooking the rust). It's out in the shed to check for sure but attached is the picture. I think it's original paint.

As 55Brodie said, Argent is the correct color for that panel. I've seen them painted body color and in my opinion I don't think it looks right. But to each, his own.

I've used a '79 Ford/TBird metallic silver that looks real good on a couple cars now.

All I've seen up into the 1960's Fords were that silver. Other car manufacturers did it as well.

I had it painted body colour yesterday, paint match was ok but not 100%. Anyway, painted the underside today with some satin black and then managed to knock the panel off the bench straight onto my rough concrete floor. Not one of my more constructive days!!!

I might temporarily fit the newly painted damaged panel and see how it looks!

I painted mine body color and mounted it and the bumper before I installed the grill,I just didn't care for it so I took it back apart, sandblasted it and painted it argent silver. HRP

to each their own but personally prefer body color, but if you're doing a ''restoration'' then its argent silver some of the mag wheel paints work well for that. and so you don't go crazy finding ''argent'' you need to know argent translates to silver. so silver silver is what you want, lol

Mine will be silver, but the silver that is the body color, not Argent.

I don't dislike the Argent, just prefer the body color. In my case, with the body being Dark Tarnished Silver, I'd be afraid if I went with Argent it would look like I tried and failed to match.
