Is a 4R70W a AOD transmission? And will it fit a 302 engine?

Yes it is an overdrive transmission. I have one in my regular car. Ford makes lots of variations on these transmissions, from truck use to Mustang use. There are versions that will fit a 302, but it is important to know where the 302 came from in order to get the "right" transmission.

Is this trans smaller than a GM 700R4 ? I would hope I can get O.D. in my '40 Ford with SBC without gutting the center section/X member.

I'm pretty sure this is an update of the 1st AOD and is computer controlled. My 302 F150 has one in it. It was rebuilt at 225,000 miles. Put in everything. Came out in 94. Not sure if it's smaller than a GM 700r4, but it's better. Of course everything Ford is better. Maybe not cheaper, as you know by your Ford having a sbc. And start trashing.....

The 4R70W is what replaced the AOD-E and is computer controlled. Its the same size as an AOD/AOD-E and has lower fist and second gear ratios: 1st 2.84 :1 2nd 1.55 vs 1st 2.400:1 2nd 1.467:1. I have a 4R70W gear set in the AOD in my F100.

Gary I am in the process of installing a 2004r od trans in my 40 sedan. It requires some t******* of the lower x member legs and the lower center plate if your are using CE stuff. It also requires moving the wishbones just out side the x member legs [as opposed to directly under] or 4 bar, or independent front end. Smaller than 700R4 and pretty sure it is smaller than an AOD. Pictures to follow.

The issue with the Ford trans is some models have longer tail shafts than others. A truck, for example is longer than one that came from a Mustang. Also the mounting holes may be different. As I recall, the Ford trans is about the same dimension side to side as a 200r4, I don't know about 700r4.

My brother lives in TN and has quite a sense of humor, too. Problem is , my '40 is a running, driving car with a stock trans and banjo. I "require" decent gas mileage in order to drive cross-country if I desire. The 700R4 is very large on its right side and needs more t******* of the X-member and center section than I want to do. I asked a trans man about the 200 4R, but he claims this trans is VERY expensive to build for the street, that I would be better off with the 700R4. I don't want to pull the body, and that seems to be my biggest problem. We in the car club have always built from the frame up, so my buds don't want to help.

O.K. The width is what causes the problem with Ford frames. My '32 Highboy has a 700R4 behind a Vortec 350 with 3:70 gears and gets 22 mpg at 70mph. I need similar mileage in my '40 so I can travel anywhere. I will ask our trans man about Ford autos w O.D.

Gary I am running a 2004r in my 40 coupe. It was no more expensive to build than the 700 I replaced. I have several friends running 2004r's with much success. Now they are not high horsepower cars, just cruisers. Now any newer transmission is going to require some center mods to the x member. Here is what mine looks like prepared for the 2004r. I have the Ch***is Engineering center section. You can see where the wishbones have to be split to in order to clear the trans pan. They are on the outside of the legs. 100_9038.JPG

Here is the 2004r [blue] and the AOD

Here is a 700r4 [on right] compared to the AOD on the left. Pretty similar in width. Also the AOD is bulkier in the bell housing area and my guess is the trans cover / firewall might need some m***aging. The 200 only requires t******* off the two non chevy holes on top of the bell housing to clear the 40 firewall/trans cover.

I have a 350/700R4 in my shoebox, and a 351/4R70W in my '56. I prefer the ratios and shifting with the GM setup over those with the Ford. Admittedly my 700R4 may just be set up and adjusted better than my 4R70W, but based on my experience with my 2 cars, I prefer the GM.

The tailshafts are only 1 1/4" longer on Ford trucks and some Lincolns, been down that road a bunch. ;)

Actually the 2004r is almost two inches narrower than the AOD. The 700R4 is almost exactly the same width as the AOD. These are measurements at the pan mounting surface. I have one of each trans on hand if you need other measurements.

Thw 4r70W is a much improved AOD, it is electronicaly comtrolled. Pickup and p***enger cars are the same length, I did rebuild some when I was a mechanic at the Ford dealership. Yes they will fit a 302
