I am working on installing a WC T5 transmission into my 1932 Ford 5 Window. I have a Ford 351 Windsor in the car. I had a top loader 4 speed and 3rd gear was getting noisy so I thought it would be a good time to up grade to a 5 speed. I am looking for a thread on the finer points of the conversion. I have a S10 tail shaft which will move the shifter away from my seats. Right now the tail shaft does not quite match up to the T5. I am wondering if there is some interference that I should know about. Any ideas?
I would look at some of the sites that address using a T5 in early mustangs. As I am sure you are aware, the 351w is in the same family as the 289 and 302 (5.0)s. I have never gone this swap, only the T5 to flathead ones, but I have seen a lot of information on swapping T5 into the 1964 up mustangs. All of the T5 tailshafts should interchange without any issues. The problems are with the speedometer drives with the later T5s. Is your T5 Ford or Chevy bolt pattern?
I would really consider a much stronger Tremec TKO over the T-5 for anything larger than a 302. They come with a Ford pattern and multiple shifter locations. JMO.
First off, you are talking about a tail housing swap not a tailshaft swap correct? The interference you are running into is probably the oil slinger. The oil slinger is the small white plastic plug on the end of the fifth gear. Some of these were a little different. Some people say you don't need one at all. I usually have good luck with using the same one from the s10 donor trans.
Thanks for the reply. I got everything hooked up finally, just needed a small spacer for the 5th gear shaft. Everything seems to be ok now. I am working on a plate to mount the slave cylinder to the trans for the clutch linkage. The bell housing I am using is from a 3.8 V6 and it was a cable operated clutch with the clutch fork coming out angled toward the bottom of the bell housing. It is going to put the slave cylinder very low. Other than that it is all together. The S10 tail housing moved the shifter far enough forward to clear my seats which will be helpful.
