Looking for someone that can provide some guidance on converting 6 volt incandescent lamps to a brighter brake and taillight for a 6 volt system. Can anyone provide me with some information? I know that you can buy 12 volt LED kit for taillights, but I have the original 6 volt system in my 36 Ford. I stopped at an electronic supply house told about "EL" Electroluminescent wire. Any thoughts? Thanks
EL isn't all that bright. Google finds 6v LED bulbs, though. http://www.ledlight.com/s25-24-led-light-6-volt-dc.aspx http://forums.aaca.org/f158/6-volt-led-tail-light-bulbs-209694.html
Nothing to it, just find the 6 volt led bulb that has the same base and you're all set. There are different bulbs for different purposes so be sure it is a tail light bulb or whatever. No kit needed, just replace the bulbs. Here's one http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-six-volt-...et-dual-contact-bright-bulbs-HP-/161477108876 Bob http://www.bobsretrophobia.com/
ps you will need a led flasher or just add an incandescent bulb in the circuit. Bob http://www.bobsretrophobia.com/
Thanks Bob & David! That should do the trick. I don't have turn signals, so don't need the flasher. Thanks Again!!!
A 6V lamp of a given wattage isn't any dimmer than a 12V lamp of the same wattage; it simply draws more amps. If you have dim lights now, it's one of two things; poor photometrics in the taillight design, or low voltage to the lamp due to voltage drop. A LED will help with drop (reducing the current), but a LED may actually have worse photometrics combined with an existing lens than a standard lamp. You might try painting the inside of the lamp housing with white or silver paint.
