I have an 8" Maverick rear axle that does not have the oil fill hole in the back of the differential housing. Before I re-***emble I would like to weld one in. Does anyone have the location of the hole so I can fill if I have to after ***embly?
You should do a intro ... before asking questions on the open board ... BUT There are a few different avenues ( or different ways to approach it ) 1 ) cut the hole at just above the fluid level ... whick is usually the bottom of the axle tubes. 2 ) install the bung high on the center ... and fill the rear end until the plug in the center section ... flows
I don't remember any 8" having a fill hole in the back but..... If you wanted one I would see where the hole is in the gear housing, measure it heightwise from the nearest mounting stud and drill the fill hole there. Put it off to the side away from the ring gear teeth.
You also can measure the height of the fill plug on the 3rd member (drivers side behind yoke) and duplicate that height on the rear of the diff housing. Ray
There is a fill plug in the pumpkin. No need to make a hole in the back. A hole in the bottom and a plug is handy though.
Some 8" pumpkins have a fill hole and some do not. Some 8" housings have a fill hole and some do not. It is possible to ***emble a rear end from parts and have no fill hole. In addition to a fill hole a drain hole in the bottom is recommended.
Thanks for all the advise, sorry no intro on my first post. I am a 64 year old street rodder from Mississippi. I have a 31 Chevy truck street rod and am building a 30 Model A sedan that the 8" is going in. I guess I am one of the unlucky ones, the back has no fill plug and the 3.55 gear chuck I bought @ Pate Swap meet this year has no fill hole so I figured someone here would have the dimensions where I could locate one before I re-***emble. I had already decided to put in a drain, so thanks.

I ran into that once with an 8 inch i had in my Falcon.I changed out the center section after breaking the first one.The new one didnt have a fill plug as yours .I would just jack up one side off the car and fill it through the vent tube .If the rearend isnt leaking gear oil ,you shouldnt have to mess with it often. It wasnt worth messing with installing a fill plug IMO ,but thats just me...
I have the same thing in my 30 Model-A Pick-up when I put in the rear end I jacked up 1 side higher & filled it with lube. I figured if I ever have to drain it I would just pull the axle & drain it that way. Well I am changing gears & ended up with the same problem now I can't remember just how much oil I had to put in. Getting old I guess
