Decided to take some one's advice and change to oil. Going to start taking things apart this week.

  2. What are we looking at here? Is that a drain pan? You are saying there is no debris in the oil?..That's great
That kinda rules out broken rockers, springs, pushrods, piston pins, skirts etc.
I would jack it up now and take the three bolts out off the torque converter. Push it back a bit and see if it spins free.
Start it up and listen to the sound of the starter itself, and then the engine..Does it sound normal like it used to?
If so, you probably have a cracked flex plate , if you're lucky.

The pan looks like I have glitter sprinkled in it. The pieces are very fine. There are two small bugs that flew in. I tried using a higher resolution photo but it was too large.

Should I refill oil and start again on just start tearing down.

  4. I see it now.
Do the test with each spark plug wire like I said the other day.
If you can isolate the cylinder, pull that valve cover and take a look.
If nothing is amiss, pull that plug and stick your finger in the hole while someone cranks it over..Disable the ignition of course.
    No or weak compression?
    GTO...Get tools out!

It's a 305! Don't spend a bunch of money trying to save a 305. That little bore is a pain with bigger valves. Find/steal/buy a filter cutter and see what's in the filter. Pull the valve covers and remove the rockers and push rods. Check for bent push rods or bad rockers. Drop the pan if it's possible without pulling the engine and see what you can see. Get a hold of a bore scope and go thru spark plug holes, into the lifter valley, down intake and exhaust ports and see if you can spot any problems. Pull the flex plate, balancer and timing cover.

Do some investigation work but don't waste money on a 305. We had to run stock block 305's in a sprint car cl*** and the blocks are a joke.

I can't believe I read this whole thread. There's filings in the oil, it rattles like marbles in a coffee can AND it's missing like it has three plug wires off. You need another engine...

Engine is going to be torn apart. I need something to do while drinking beer.

The edelbrook intake should still be good. There are people who are looking for the 416 heads as well. Water pump has no metal going through it. I can get more for the aluminum pan than the rest of the engine. S**** metal guys will pick up the rest from my driveway.

Pulled the cam and nothing looked flat. Took measurements with my rude tools and lift came out correct. Pulled the oil pan and there was a light coting of blackish setiment on the bottom. The only thing shiny are the pistons. I could not locate any wear spots or loose parts. I will check the lifters this weekend to see if any are stuck. I was hoping to find something to fix??

    Attention 'Germ'.......paging 'Germ' please.....

  11. I had a 305 "High Output" (<-LOL) in an '84 Monte SS. Spinning a crankshaft bearing was a common problem to those gems (on top of wiping out cam lobes). Probably a result of the axle twisting horsepower produced ****ing birds through the excessively sized Quadrabog and out through the ear splitting hi-flow Corvette catalytic converter
