I have a 1940 steering wheel and column that hasn't been apart in a while. It's stuck on good, is there a way too separate them with out using a steering wheel puller yet ? If I half too get a steering wheel puller what works best for a forty steering wheel. Thanks Austinrod
put nut back on, to protect threads. sit in seat and put pressure on wheel with your knees. place hammer on steering shaft and whack it with another hammer. i know what everyone is going to say, bla bla bla, i do this all the time. i dont even own a sterring wheel puller.
Any steering wheel puller should work.. Squirt some knocker loose in it, put the nut on loose and tap the puller with a hammer every turn or so and it should come off...
Can you rent a puller or maybe some on the auto parts stores will have one they can loan? I don't know about you but it is something I don't need very often. Charlie Stephens
I rented one from auto zone for $1.00. That was after pounding on my steering wheel with a rubber mallet for two hours. You can probably get an elcheapo one from HF if you want your own (same one as AZ). ** clock your wheels and steering wheel at dead center. That way after you re-install you are not driving with your wheel ****-eyed.
Minor stuff... I bet someone in Austin owns a puller, and maybe there's a hardware store that can special order some 5/16" bolts... Early Ford upper steering threads are SOFT. Keep nut on there, do not apply violence. I like to drop a bolt with a small divot drilled in center of head as a bearing point for the puller. Horn wire (looks like you don't have one) can have its terminal loop slightly squeezed and then pushed half an inch down the hole to get wire out of the way. The woodruff key is special, a Ford part made shallower than standard hardware store woodruff. Don'tloseit.
I used this puller. Well worth the money. http://www.harborfreight.com/bolt-type-wheel-puller-set-69889.html Print out the coupon and get 20% off. That makes the final price about $10. http://www.harborfreight.com/affiliate17549.html?utm_source=cj&utm_medium=aff&utm_campaign=offers-coupons&hftref=cj Sure beats "hammering" on your column. Steering wheel threads are 5/16-18UNF. Apply light coat of anti-seize to column and steering wheel nut when re-installing wheel.
LOL blah blah blah, I do it this way when I don't have a steering wheel puller myself and have always had pretty good luck this way. As far as a wheel puller just a piece of flat bar with a couple of holes in it will work just fine.
I've had good luck pouring boiling water over the centre so as to heat and expand it without damaging plastic, in combination with pounding on the rim or with a puller on a really stubborn one. Wouldn't venture it if I was using B Ramsey's method......
