So i need a selenoid to get my OD working. Im stuck in town and apparently they make these things sporadically......Anyone know how to get my od working? Or has one for sale? btw 12v
JFYI, a friend of mine uses one off a '60s 12V Studebaker on his '51 Merc, (which uses the same ****** as your Ford,) if that's any help. I plan to find one for my '51 Ford OD also.
I could be completely wrong here but it is my understanding that the Borg Warner over drive's were used on many different makes of vehicles and that many of the parts are interchangeable between makes. So I suggest you take a look at this solenoid and see if it will fit your application. http://www.kaiserwillys.com/product/353/willys-jeep-overdrive
5th avenue auto parts. www.fifthaveinternetgarage.com is where i got mine. not exactly cheap, just measure your old one to be sure it fits. worked on mine (49-50 ford o.d.)
Have you checked eBay? There are B&W solenoids for sale all the time... http://www.ebay.com/itm/4AR-10B-62-Overdrive-Solenoid-/321646236384?hash=item4ae39c12e0&vxp=mtr However you should check the interchangeability; If I recall it right, solenoids for Packard units had longer plunger than the others, they won't fit any other model. The solenoid id specifies the voltage and physical dimensions and there is a B&W do***ent in the web with crossreference btw the codes and applications (makes & years). I'll link it if I find it again (used it an year ago to track down one for mine).
That Willys solenoid for "46-56" confuses me. IIRC, those were all 6 volt systems. I may be wrong, but I'd double check that one before buying.
http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/trans-partsprices-BW-ODparts.htm http://www.fifthaveinternetgarage.com/overdrive_parts.php Couple of possibilities... 90% of BW overdrives are R10. Heavy duty stuff, like Lincolns and the Packard mentioned above, are R-11 with everything bigger.
You do not need a 12volt solenoid. A 6 volt will work fine. I have been running mine for over 10 years. These don't normally burn up, they have a set of points in side that can be cleaned up. If it does not work it could be relay or the gov. The Flathead forum has a diag list to go by., I use it all the time to them.
When looking for BW od solenoids, 6 volt units will have no voltage markings. 12 volt units will be stamped , 12 volt, on the end bell (cover).
Hey thanks Bruce! there are some nice reproduction parts offered on the fifthaveinternetgarage site. I was just researching the GL1 oil tonight. It is supposed to be available at NAPA under part # 65-201.
Wow!!! thanks for all of the info guys!!1 Im definitely in the right place.. Ill pull the old 6v and see what is going on and post back..Im very impressed with this forum..wow!!
A distributor machine can test these, outside of old car circles good luck finding someone with one though
How does a distributor machine test an overdrive solenoid? All you need to do to test the solenoid is supply power with a jumper wire and hear if it clicks, or, take it out and bench test it with a power supply.
I dont know, i have an allen machine, and i swear the the manual mentions testing OD solenoids i never looked into it. I simply saw it while looking for other stuff
The correct Borg&Warner part code for a 12V solenoid coorrect for your unit is AR-11-62, should be stamped in the unit. http://www.hemmings.com/hmn/stories/2010/09/01/hmn_feature29.html One important note when you're running the OD; the OD unit uses 40-weight motor oil, not any transmission fluid. This is particulary instructed in B&W operating & maintenance manuals. Good manual can be downloaded from; http://www.oldcarmanualproject.com/...ner Overdrive/pages/Overdrive_Page_19_jpg.htm
tinsled said, One important note when you're running the OD; the OD unit uses 40-weight motor oil, not any transmission fluid. This is particulary instructed in B&W operating & maintenance manuals I spent a lot of time researching this lubrication issue. If you read the last entry under lubrication (F.) it says to use a straight mineral oil. This lubrication section of the manual can be pretty confusing but after reading all I could find on the subject I chose the NAPA brand GL1 gear oil.It is a mineral oil that should actually give the best performance in this application. The other oils just have too many additives that can be harmful to the old gear box. Just my 2 cents worth.
More than likely you have the T 86 trans. Just use a sol unit from a 56 up car with the same trans. But as stated by several others use your 6 volt unit on 12 V or just install a ballast resistor to drop voltage from 12 to 6 to use the 6 V unit.
I need to add if your car is a convert or a no b pillar car the sol is different. it is built a a different angle to clear the added structure on these cars. The crocked one came in Kysers and the conv based fords.1951 year. they bring very very high money, good luck..
I think the distributor machine had the ignition "interrupter" feature, that many overdrives utilized when engaging.
