I've got a freshly rebuilt 276 hemi for my 46 Plymouth project. I'm planning to purchase a 4 barrel intake, what 4 barrel would you guys recommend? I'm planning a 5 speed od trans and a 3.73 explorer rear, bit building a race machine just a good daily driver I'd like decent mileage.

While I cannot disagree, those 3 deuce low deck manifolds are like the holy grail. If you can find one they want as much as a motor for it.

Will it be an OEM intake or aftermarket? If OEM open up the bore holes & a 500 Edelbrock fits on it nicely, probably a 500 will be good on that small a CID. If aftermarket a 390 or 60 Holley.

That is Bill's 241 Dodge in the video.

What style of 4-bbl is desired? WCFB, AFB, or Holley ?
A WCFB from a 354-392 would likely be more than enough, all depending of course on just how much cam and compression you have.

Its gonna be an aftermarket intake. I was thinking a 390 holley manual choke, very mild cam and stock compression, bores cleaned up at .020 over

Look on the web there is a math formula for figuring it to a very precise end. Hot Rod magzine had it in one of there mags but I can not find it now

  8. I'd lean towards the 390 Holley, or a maybe 450 if you can find one. The small venturies on either will give you nice crisp throttle response, the 390 carb will plenty big unless you're twisting it to over 6K rpm.

A 1955 291 was the only low deck Desoto factory 4 barrel. Hot Heads offer theres for $500. Hells gate hot rods offers a U Fab log kit on Ebay.

With that info then you are on track with the 390. I do like the look of the Holley on top of an EarlyHemi.

Is it just me or do Holley 4bbls seem to need more frequent idle mixture and speed adjustments?

I've got a 291 with factory 4 barrel intake, I don't have any plans for it right now so maybe I will use that intake with a holley 390 and call it good.

Not for me, Float level seems to lower some over time.

  15. Well 2 fours or enderly barn doors or . . . :D

I think that most of the people on here are going to say get yourself an edelbrock, I am going to say get a 600 holley vac secondary just to throw some grit in the spurs.

I don't need to over carb this little hemi. It's a 4 door daily driver, I think the 390 will serve me well!

  17. The 'modern' Holley came out the same year as the AFB, 1957....

  18. LOL and it screamed "Hot Rod" through the '60s.

the 600 cfm 4160 won't be too much carb for the little hemi. The secondaries are controlled by vacuum and won't come open until the engine needs them, can also be adjusted to require a lot more vacuum to come open by changing the spring that controls them.

Could just be that the lumpy cam and automatic in my other car (BBC) makes it more sensitive. Or the 25 year old gaskets....
