I've been reading what I can find about Truckstell Tip-Toe-Matic overdrives for closed drivelines. So model 101 was up to '48 and model 103 was '49 and later? Is the torque tube itself different or what? Wondering if I could use (if I could find) a model 101 on my '52 or not. Any info is appreciated.
http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o197/50ChevyFrank/MISC/truckstell1.jpg I probably know less about them than you do. I did buy a copied installation manual off ebay a few years ago. Don't know where it is now. Have you searched this forum for threads about them? I think it has been discussed before. And on the Stovebolt forums as well. Some guy posted about a Truckstell in a Suburban... Sorry I'm no help.
I've read the threads here and on Stovebolt, basically anything I can find online. I don't have the manuals or brochures though. Thought they might be on the Old Car Manual Project but I couldn't find anything there.
I have several of each model. The main difference is the input shaft and input housing are about 3 or 4 inches longer on the 103. I presumed it was their way of making the planetary section able to clear the floor tunnel on the later model ch***is. It moves the unit farther down the torque tube and thus away and closer to the ground. The other difference is the linkage setup. The 103 uses a spring loaded cable at the overdrive proper where as the 101 had the spring incorporated into the underdash mechanism. The actual overdrive housing and internals are identical. The linkages are entirely different, there again partly to accommodate the lower profile body style of the 49-54 models. As a closing comment, I can't stress strongly enough the need to use the factory linkage or a well engineered copy the incorporates all the reverse defeat features both versions utilize. These units CANNOT go in reverse when in OD. It is a sure bet that without the auto defeat someday you'll hit reverse without kicking it out of overdrive and you'll blowout the tangent spring and wipe out the "sprague clutch". I have a copies of the installation manual and service manual, it required many evenings of study to gain full understanding of these units and how they function. That enabled me to install one in my 54 GMC behind a stock 4speed hydro. With the TIPTOEmatic feature I can split shift a very useable 7 speeds, lots of fun. Setup correctly Truckstells are a very stout and wonderful overdrive. Good luck to who endeavor, KB aka telekenfun.
Good day Telekenfun, I just recently purchased a Truckstell Overdrive system. It came off a working 1947 Fleetline AeroSedan. I plan to install the device onto my 1946 Fleetline AeroSedan. Thank you very much for the valuable literature for these Truckstell units. I continue to look around the forums to see who else has come across these units. Extremely rare from what i have seen. Thanks charlie.carlosjimenez@gmail.com Thanks!
Telekenfun, What would it take to get a copy of the manual for the 103? I am currently working on one. If you hav a spare cable ***yenbly I would be interested in purchasing that also.
I'm looking for a service manual for a Truckstell Tiptoe-Matic 101. If anyone has one or a resource for one I'd be happy to pay for a copy. Thank you.
