Hello all, I am starting on my first project. A 1949 Pontiac 2dr Fastback. I am having trouble finding much info on what works and what doesn't. I find a lot of info on 49-54 Chevys, not so much for Pontiacs. My rear passenger leaf spring is broken and am trying to find out if the Chevy rear springs are the same dimension? I am going to be lowering the car, and would rather just buy the Jamco lowering springs for the Chevy cars instead of having to have custom springs built for the Pontiac. Does anyone know if the Chevy springs are the same, or where I can buy springs for the Pontiac? I am not opposed to using blocks with a stock spring either. I found a set on California Pontiac Restoration, but don't really want to spend that kind of money for stock springs. My other thought was to find out if any later model vehicles might have the same spring rate/dimensions as the Pontiac and just get a set from my local junkyard. Thanks in advance.
Eaton Springs has all the original specs for your Poncho. They also offer lowered springs front and rear. Not the cheapest maybe, but great folks to deal with, prompt service. All the right parts that fit. www.eatondetroitspring.com
You can have springs made for your specific vehicle. St. Louis Spring Co. will do it and you may have a spring company closer to you in one of the bigger cities in Nebraska.
I would go with the Eaton spring Co. Tell them how low you want your car to set and they will put the right arch in the springs , they are very good to work with and really good people ! good luck : Kenny G
The Pontiac chassis is entirely different from 49-54 Chevy and nothing interchanges. I can't say on 55-57 Chevy but it may work; 49-57 Pontiac use more or less the same chassis, and the '57 Pontiac rear swaps into 55-57 Chevy cars fairly easy (said to be a bolt-in). An S10 4x4 rear may fit the car but has a different bolt pattern, so you'd have different wheels front to rear.
I bought the car as a abandoned project with no rear. Another member on here had a 55 chevy rear and springs laying around so I used them to make a roller to get it home. They bolted right up and track width and all looks pretty good.
