Ok, so my favorite car is a 58 Corvette. But my chances of buying one of those is the same as winning Powerball and Mega Bucks on the same day.

So, instead, I bought a 58 GMC truck. With 9600 original miles. It might look like a fire truck currently. Its been inside since new..

Anyway, no VIN decoders for GMC trucks on the web that come close for this VIN:

    3748PS1714F

Any help would be appreciated. And the series model breakdown would be nice also..

The VIN is not like a chevy....this will get you started, but won't answer all your questions.

Well, I guess I am down to the 374 and the F. Maybe the F is for Firetruck??

My guess is yes. I see it there, however, I just found it by driving by it a couple days ago.

Nice truck, the hood bird is a tough one to find. It is a two year only special order item.

The truck is a series 370, and the engine is a de-bored Pontiac 370 to 336 CID. And is a V8. Tires are 900x20.

So maybe the 37 is for 370 series and the 4 is for wheelbase (?). I will measure that Friday when I drive it home.

But what about that F at the end??

    And again, thanks, Jim

I guess my main concern now is it a 2 ton or heavier. Need that info so I can figure out what plate to get for it. I was going to go collector plate, but you can not haul or tow anything over 500 pounds and I might want to haul cars (cl***ics) with it. Probably weight it when complete and add 10,000 for licensing.

I know a lot of the bigger trucks have another plate inside the glovebox lid. This plate shows the motor, trans, rearend gears and other stuff. Check it out.

  17. post it up if possible, I love real info on old trucks like this. where did it gets it first job at? I used to work at a FD that had a water tanker that had a 413 w/ dual 4's, sure wish I would have kept up with that truck after I left.
