Walked up to my Radio Shack but it was closed:eek: out of business so now where do I find the diode to stop the "run on":(. If I knew they were closing I would've bought a bunch of those 276-1661 diodes.

    Thanks in advance

Sad to see them go. We had an elderly gentleman working at my local store for awhile, man that guy knew everything about electronics.

I am too. I live about three minutes from their world headquarters in Fort Worth. Lots of jobs are impacted. Hopefully they can restructure into a business model that will succeed.

  5. Yes, it is sad to see them go. I am an amateur radio operator & back in the 70's when I was building electronic projects, designing & printing circuit boards, etc, I was there every other day.

As much as they were a go to place for small electrical parts, I never felt compelled to buy anything substantial (TV, computer, phone..) there. Maybe they need a better house brand (Archer?), maybe just the young kid employees, maybe just the name Radio Shack.

Our local small town Florida store closed a few months ago. Like Tandy Leather and a few other old names, business is hurting. Always friendly service and most employees were helpful.

  9. Call me a cynic if you like, but I think this is a fine example of how mainstream America doesn't fix anything these days. Most consumers are infatuated with newer (perceived) better, higher priced, less useful "stuff". "Why would you want to fix that old (insert item here)? Here's a brand new one."

Friend and I were talking about this yesterday. To me, the moment i realized this was coming was when I asked for wheel cylinder kits for my old F100, and they had to order them....but the Chinese made new ones were on the shelf. this was about 1992.

Sad that they are gone, been a few years since I was in one of their stores...it was all about cell phones, etc when i was in there, they really didn't want to be bothered with component sales. I do remember going to the one "back home" with my dad a lot. He even had a battery club card.

I found those diodes at a tractor supply place near my house.

They're not totally gone. 1700 stores will remain open and be trimmed down - they'll drop things like cameras and laptops that people didn't buy there anyway. There was just a news article today about them, you can check the web for the story.

  12. You are so right Ribbedroof. We do live in a throwaway world. Newer isn't always better.

In my livingroom I have a 26 inch RCA TV that a fellow employee gave me over 10 years ago. On the back, the date of manufacture is 6/86. It is on almost all the time and still works very well.
My neighbor has a new flatscreen and she keeps telling us that we need a new modern TV. What she forgets to mention is that this is her third new TV in the last seven years. They keep on going out. It's a good thing she bought the extended warranty. I think I'll stick to my old RCA.

The thing that really worries me nowadays is how kids are so mechanically inept. How do they fix their bicycles and skateboards? Or, how does a young driver change a flat tire? It sounds funny, but I've met a few kids that didn't know how to do it--and they were guys! If it doesn't have a computer program or app to repair something, they can't figure it out. Makes me wonder where we will be in another twenty-five years or so..........E

I have been buying electronic parts from Ebay. Get 5 or 10 for the price of 1 at Radio Shack and free shipping. But you have to wait a few weeks while they come from China.

I don't like it either but that's the way things are these days.

The clerks in our store here seemed like McDonalds cast-offs...No wonder people stopped trading with Radio Shack

Every time I went into one looking for something they used to have they didn't have it anymore. On top of that the employees didn't know **** about anything. I found other sources for what I wanted.

Radio Shack has been nothing but "Cellphone Shack" around here for several years. The two closest to me had NO electronic parts at all!!! But, if you wanted a damn phone or some other ridiculous entertainment device, or an RC toy, then that was heaven for you. Good riddance, Radio Shack. They quit being worthy of the name locally a LONG time ago.

  18. I had one of those! 1986 RCA 26" console. Voltage drop killed it 3 times, just a couple small parts, no problem getting it repaired (and the power co footed the bill) the first 2 times 1991 and 1996, last time 2006, nobody even wanted to discuss repairing it. Sad, the picture on the new stuff is nowhere as crisp as the RCA was.

Guess it's OK, though, not much worth watching anymore anyway.

If you live near a Fry's Electronics, you're in luck. They have components. If not, you can order from Digikey or Mouser.

the shack near me I had to educate the employees what a capacitor was , all they knew was what computers and sound systems work best together for gaming and some cell phones . they closed all the stores around me .
for components I deal with newark electronics ( been around since my dad was a teen and building radios ) and digikey .

Our town only had one. The employees wouldn't know a diode from a dinosaur. Only thing they were good for was buying/paying a cell phone/bill. I saw that they closed but didn't know why,,,,,, or cared.

One of our local Radio Shack stores recently closed. Not much of a loss as far as I'm concerned. A poor selection of electronic components lately. Fortunately, there is an old time electronics store within about 15 miles that has been in business for a long, long time....Moyer Electronics in Hazleton, PA. Just recently purchased a replacement capacitor for a 67 Dodge Charger Electroluminescent gauge power supply from them. They had it in stock. They probably have original replacement parts for A****er-Kent radios, and Dumont televisions.:D My only other source for components is on-line with Allied Electronics, or Newark, or Ebay, etc.

Most of them around here have closed and at the closest one that is still open has some clueless employees, they did not have much that I wanted to buy for many years so I did not go in except for buying batteries for my cordless phone. I used to get my car stereos and home stereo speakers from them and I bought the last car stereo they had from one store back in the mid 90s.

I spent hours going over this catalog when I was a lad. I'll miss being able to buy any electronic components in town...I guess it's DigiKey and Mouser from now on.

My local store is still open. They have an isle with pullout drawers containing switches, fuses, connectors and such. I probably spend $25 a year in there, certainly not enough to keep them going. Bought a toggle switch for my Mister Coffee a month ago.

There were quite a few Shacks in my area but hardly anyone shopped at any of them so they are gone now. Luckily, there is still a "mom and pop" electrical store in the area.

  28. Radio Shack let quality slip badly, that's one reason they fell out of favor. Before I gave up on them completely, I'd take my multimenter with me to the store to check the parts before I left. When 50% or more of their components check bad right out of the package, it's time to move on.... The only reason I stuck with them that long was it's another 40 miles to the next supplier from my rural location.

  29. Radio Shack went bust here (Australia) about 20 years ago. They were known here as "Tandy Electronics" and lasted about 20 years. They used to charge $2 for 5 resistors when everyone else charged 5c apiece.` Their staff were OK, at least they could look up a replacement transistor for you. Nowdays I hate going to the "Chain electronics " stores as their staff have NO technical knowledge unless you want sparkly little lights to mount under your stupid "Blingmobile" to show off it's 45" wheels.

I worked a couple years a OReillys and they didn't stock the parts to rebuild a GM alternator. Yes I'm talking bearings and brush set. The Times are a changing, is that a Beatles song?:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
