Has anybody made a driveshaft balancer for static balance ? I will try to explain my idea for one. Weld two sets of ' Y ' shaped pieces of steel with low resistance bearings ( like old generator bearings) installed on studs at the top of the Y's. Make a jig and weld the Y's on it and lay the drive shaft ( without yoke ) on the bearings. Add and weld weight as necessary. I hope this makes sense and maybe I am all wet but I think it MIGHT work.

Boy I don't know with the small diameter of a drive shaft if the heavy side will roll to the bottom. I static balance motorcycle wheels all the time and even with the large diameter it's tough getting a consistent 'bottom'. How do the drive shaft places do it?

  3. that is why they spin balance them....Put it in, put the car on jack stands, add some hose clamps and run it, move the clamps until it runs smooth at 65 mph, weld washers on the shaft where the clamp screws were, respin....done it many times.....

Driveshaft places use a machine. (Gaffney's in San Jose had a Stewart-Warner, IIRC.)
Static balance on a driveshaft is akin to balancing radial tires with a bubble.
