Hi I'm new to this forum, I'm sure there has been a post about this but honestly I don't want to read through a hundred posts... I've installed a helix mustang 2/ corner killer kit in my 65 f 100... yes I know, the helix company and parts are ****! I broke a ball joint and would like to know if anyone knows what year/ make/ model of a ball joint to replace it, it's screw in and I've read some comments and the part #772 does not fit...any help would be greatly appreciated
You may have to call Helix to ask what ball joint they used. Speedway sells the Moog #727 equal, which most all of the Mustang II arms use. One for $14, and and an AFCO one #20036 for $34.95 Sounds like you've already had the $14 one, maybe a good time to upgrade. You also want to check out range of suspension travel beforehand and see what the limits up and down are. Ball joints have a limited movement, so you want to have a snubber or bumpstop that contacts before the ball joints are maxed/bottom out. The manufacture should (?) have done this for you, but check for yourself, it's your life not theirs.
I don't have bump stops but that's good to know... I've tried contacting helix but I don't feel like waiting for 2 months... I'll look into those part numbers, thank you I really appreciate your help/time and input, I think the next step is new control arms and coil mount
If you do end up replacing the control arms, consider finding some that use something other than urethane bushings. IMHO, they ****.. Especially on the lowers, urethane doesn't carry weight well, and it eats them up. I'm planning on changing mine out and going to Ride Tech's, that are rubber bushed. Good luck.
I saw another post on here that mentioned small variances in the thread sizes. some brands fit tighter than others. Or is it just obviously the wrong size?
You didn't indicate whether you broke a upper or lower ball joint. Some manufacturers/suppliers of the MMII style front ends have used upper joints in the lower A arm position. I know this for a fact as an acquaintance of mine had one break on his '46 Ford and discovered the type being used. And, his front end came from a respected name supplier. The upper joint is not engineered to take the loads the lower one is designed for. I think this occurred because the MMII spindle lower ball joint tapered hole is the size of the (Mopar) screw in joint used in the upper location. Using the correct lower joint may require reaming the lower tapered hole to the correct size. It is worth your while to determine what you replace it with. And change the other side as well, should you find that uppers were used in the lower position. Ray
From what I can fond most of the MII front ends run Volarie miles style ball joints rather than big car units. Old news for most probably.
I had one of those generic ball joints break on me once. It was an upper so it defiantly didn't go through the stresses a lower one does. The socket just shattered. It was a freak thing(maybe) but I would never use a generic ball joint again.
