I have a '39 Ford on an S10 frame. I'm using a '78 Malibu master cylinder. It's new and developed a leak. I don't see any fluid at the firewall but the front reservoir is a little low. My next move is to see if a cup is nicked. I bought a new cylinder just in case but with 700 miles on the car I can't imagine any wear just yet, however I'm a little leery about a kit. Any advice? Thanks in advance, Rod

Make sure where the leak is before you work on any component. Where is the fluid going? Gary

  3. can you see it leaking? you said there is no fluid at the firewall so it must be a line, or caliper.

There is fluid on the bottom of the cylinder . I read a post about a weep hole. I didn't know there was such a thing. I'll pull it off and check. Maybe a kit will do it. Maybe??

  5. sounds like one of the fittings is leaking. use a piece of tissue to find it. clean it up real good and dry and have someone hold their foot hard on the pedal while you keep dabbing the fittings till you see fluid.

This is my guess. Altho some new parts are junk from the start. Either find the leak or swap the master.

Hope to see that 39 someday!

I had actually wondered about one of the fittings. I'll check that out. Thanks all.

it may be leaking down the inside of the firewall

Do as tb33anda3rd suggested and clean it up real good and see if fluid shows up again.
It's real easy to dribble a bit of fluid over the side when filling it too so you don't want to over fill it.

I'd be checking every fitting, line and hose from the MC to and including the wheel cylinders very closely to make sure the problem isn't somewhere beyond the master cylinder. since you are in Illinois one can be fairly sure that the car sat all winter and sitting is usually hell on wheel cylinders.

I looked over the master cylinder again today. The fluid is on the sides of the cylinder, none on the inside of the firewall. Only the front reservoir was low, and not very much. It's as if the fluid is getting by the gasket. I haven't seen such before. Any ideas? Thanks again, Rod
