I have a 54 Customline with a 239 with the little 2 barrel carburetor on it. When I am driving it and come to a quick stop or a quick turn the car stops. If I just come to a stop slowly or turn at slow speeds it does not. I was told by several people that it was a carburetor problem and most likely the float. Does anyone have any manual or something that will help me set the float correctly and see if that helps? Is there another carb that I can use on this engine? Thanks in advance.
Also look at the carb sections, sometimes those loosen up and cause all sorts of problems. Take the air cleaner off, grab the top of the carb and twist it. Those small carbs are easy to rebuild.
I considered answering you a couple of times but didnt 'cause I was waiting for others that can advice better. I had that problem but it vanished. Cant tell why. It wasnt from rebuilding the carb, but I cant say its not carb related. Might be something going on and off. I also would like to know for sure. Use the search ****on. The problem happenend to others. Regards.
I think it is a low float as quick turns and stopping pull the fuel away form jets letting in air rather than fuel.easy enough to check start it up then shut off remove top of carb and see how much fuel in bowl if you have not done before search raising float.just go easy as it won't need a lot of bending of the tang.
You didn't mention what transmission you have. The Fordomatics used a daspot on the carb linkage, sort of like a gas spring that allowed the throttle to close a bit slower and avoid stumbling and stalling. If you have a stick shift I would look at the float level and possible junk in the bowl.
I thought about that but it should not affect in turns unless he runs it in hard and mashes brakes then turns hard.when set up they do a very good job on the automatics.Brodie's suggestion on dashpot will be the easiest to check.
I have the 3 speed and it does stall when I go to turn hard. without buying the rebuild kit, does anyone have the float adjustment diagram? Would like to check my float and see if it's set correctly or not.
if you do as I said let it run to fill bowl.take top off carb notice amount of fuel if it is low carefully bend tang on float where it sits on needle.I am going to add pic to show where to bend tang pic on left there is rounded opening on float arm this the part you want bend.you will need top off for this.I usually set on flat surface as in pic now you will see a pin that holds float to body carefully push the pin out completely I use a small punch no bigger than pin.you may need to tap punch with a small hammer as they can be tight.once out you want to bend the tang bending only the tang you want to bend it so that it bends up closing the gap.do not go crazy and bend too much put it back with pin.in second pic you will see that the flat arm on float is on a plane with housing.there are measurements for this but without the gauge I try to have it on an even plane to housing if not a slight (very slight) bit higher on the float end of arm .replace top and you should be very close.be careful with choke lever as it has a spring loaded ****on that may pop off when you undo the screw holding arm, make a mental note of how it attaches so replacing will be easy.hope this makes sense and helps.
