I have my 62 Cadillac hubcaps and would like to polish them out. What is the best way to get rid of the old paint as to not damage the metal?

I have typically used chemical paint stripper for things like that. Or, I have also just used compound if there isn't much paint left.

    Lacquer thinner works also.

Brush some paint stripper on there and wipe it off with paper towels when it wrinkles up the old paint. Do it a couple times and avoid s****ing or using steel wool, that'll keep the metal underneath smooth for polishing.

I would use the Jascos paint stripper in an aerosol can. I had a bunch of dash parts that were chrome and painted but the painted part was all scratched up so I sprayed that Jascos on there and the paint just wiped off.

Oven cleaner can also take care of it. It is fairly aggressive though, so try some of the other suggestions first.

I just tried this product for the first time and was happy with the results. I needed to remove the 3-4 layers of black paint on the lower portion of my model A grill shell. I was concerned that it might screw up the stainless, but it did not. I had to apply it several times, mostly because of the several layers. It bubbled up pretty quick and I just wiped it off each time with paper towels. 4YLE2_AS01.JPG

I've found that old DOT 3 brake fluid removes paint really well, usually in places that I don't want it to.

After you get the paint off, lacquer thinner, paint remover whatever,
Brighten the clean stainless with 000 steel wool

Steel wool will scratch. Try br*** scrubbing pads from the dollar store or fine rubbing compound followed by Flitz, Autosol, or your favorite chrome polish.

Lacquer thinner won't damage your metal although you may have to soak your hubcaps for a couple days for the old paint to let go. "Gun wash" is cheaper than lacquer thinner and is the same product.
