Work shirts and jackets

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 56KUSTOM, Feb 4, 2006.

  1. Does anyone know who it was offering the slightly used work shirts and jackets a while ago?I think the demand was bigger then the supply but he said he would get more and I haven't heard anything.

    Slightly used work shirts?
So you can look like you actually "work" instantly?

    Poser, much?

The uniforms you refer to are from an era when real men who were real CRAFTSMEN wore the uniforms of their trade with PRIDE.
You could tell by a REAL MAN's clothes if he was a baker or plumber or a longshoreman or a mechanic.
And they wore them with the same pride as a lawyer wore his Brooks Brothers suit, maybe more.
My Dad wore the uniforms you are talking about and he wore them proudly in that era.
He bought them new and when they got "slightly worn" or worn out, it was from honest hard WORK.
    Not play acting.
When I was about four I knew the man my Mom said was my "Dad" from the perfume of 90 wt oil and carburetor cleaner on his work clothes that he wore home for dinner in between coming home from the service station he managed in the daytime, before going to work a second shift at the other service station he managed at night.
Double shifts for "forever" just to save up the $500 he needed to buy a house in the suburbs and get us out of "the projects".
I miss that man and I guess I get irritated at people POSING at what he did with honesty and honor.

(If you actually work in a garage and need the proper and honorable uniform of your trade, disregard the above, and please accept my apologies, but if you just want a costume to wear to the next rockerbilly dance, shame on you.)

Doc<<that is true and a good one.

I used to work at a place in the evenings and I went to work one evening and a younger kid wanted to know where I bought my jeans. So I said "Sears, why?". He said because they looked cool with all of the stains and rips in them. Then I replied, Ahhh, they are just old and dirty. He felt pretty stupid after my comment. I did mention that I could use some help if he ever wanted to stop by the shop.

  7. hell, i got some ill sell ya! they got my shops name on em with my name also, all the pockets are full of metal grind, shards of drill twists, aluminum splinters and sand. the upper sleves are worn out from wiping the sweat from my eyes and chin and the lower sleeves are all burned up from welding and cutting. most have a charred line just below the rib cage from grinding stuff on the work table. and they all smell of old gas, rust, tap ease and tide. try getting those from von dutch or jessie james. naa, ill hang on to em.

  8. I wore uniforms for 30 years. I'm done wearing a uniform. They are not made to be chic they are made to repeal grease. I'm with DrJ on this one.

I think drj has gone off again. I would like to know where to get clothes suitable for wearing in my shop because my clothes get filthy, it doesnt wash out and repeat washing wears out the clothing. Second hand clothes?? Well, hell yes! I'd like to get cheaper clothes to ruin :) I have been wearing Very Dark Blue shirts lately. The grease and other stains dont show up as bad as lighter colors. All cotton is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Its also less likely to melt to your skin if it burns.
Anyone who wants to call me a poser needs his daily Midol.

So, Where can we get dark colored, all cotton, long sleeve shirts, USED??

  10. I think 56Kustom was talking about the jackets and shirts which had some pinstriping on them that were for sale in the classifieds. Search there and you should find it.

if you really desire uniforms stay away from the crap my work makes me wear from "Bulwark". They are supposed to be flame retardant/flash resistant as a safety measure, but in all reality they just suck. when they get dirty they lose their flash resistance so you have to get new ones. and theres a whole list of things you cant expose them to like heat greater than 140 degrees, fabric softener, grease, oil, irons etc.
the stitching in these things is so poor you usually have to get new uniforms at least twice a year (hecho in mexico). for the same money they have invested in buying all personnel these clothes they could have bought each electrical dept genuine arc flash/ calorie suits with faceshields twice over. but im ranting again...sorry.

Ummm, maybe it's just me, but I think the used shirts/jackets in question were nice, because the guy who was offering them was only charging about $15-20 for a very nice jacket, and maybe $10 for a shirt?

Oh, also, I used to work in a machine shop, and we rented the uniforms, because then they took care of cleaning (saved my washing machine a TON of grief!). I would guess alot of places do this now days (dunno about 'back in the day?')

HAMBer "rjb" had the killer deals on inexpensive shirts and jackets. He was scoring second-hand work clothes, and silkscreening a bitchin' original pinstripe design of his on the back. The idea was to offer cool, inexpensive, and functional apparel that HAMBers could actually wear and not worry about fucking up in the garage. He's a really talented striper, and was also passing along an excellent value to HAMBers, while getting his name out there.

With the positive response from the board, I'm pretty sure he got overwhelmed with orders that outstripped his supply of shirts and jackets. It sounded like everyone he was able to deliver to dug the finished product. Hopefully this information is a little more helpful than DrJ's slightly used rant.

Just check the local "thrift" stores run by churches , they usually have that stuff dirt cheap. Like mentioned above Goodwill and Salvation Army stores are good places too.
