anyone know exactly were the famous photo of the gto turning on woodward ave was taken. woodward is a long road. the ad was in several magazines back in the day. i have one in my hand its a super stock april 68 pages 38-39. in the pic is a sign that says north bound woodward ave rt 10. also a separate business rt 10 and a sign for i-75. my son was recently hired by chrysler as a engineer now living in clarkston. is this close by? we would like to recreate the photo with our cars this summer. also is walter p chrysler buried at the cemetery located near 8 mile rd and woodward.
Racer-x good question. I ***umed that was an illustration, not a photo. I have subscribed because I would like to know, too
This ad? That will be hard to recreate as Woodward is no longer US-10 and there will be no signs like that. Until 1970, US 10 followed Woodward between Detroit and Pontiac. That year, Woodward Avenue was redesignated M-1 and US 10 was moved to the Lodge Freeway and Telegraph. Any signs now will say M-1 instead of US 10.
Has to be Detroit between 6-8 mile off Woodward. 10 is the Lodge Freeway...Davidson Fwy ( first freeway in America...Thank you Henry) is south of 6 mile and connects to both the Lodge to the west and I-75 to the east....leads me to pinpoint it that area near Palmer Wood and Palmer Park.
yes that is the pic. my son is home for the weekend i will show him what has been posted. we are hard core mopar guys and want to find where walter p is buried. i hear its not in a nice area off woodward. any cemeteries around that area. thanks for the info.
According to this, he is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in New York. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=200 On Woodward just south of 8 Mile is Woodlawn Cemetery. A number of Auto barons are buried there. One source says: "A**** Woodlawn’s most famous are pioneers of the auto industry. Many of their mausoleums and tombs circle a reflecting pond in the center of the cemetery. Edsel and Eleanor Ford’s graves are marked with an elegant, sleek black granite sarcophagus. (How’s this for creepy: William Clay Ford and wife Martha can visit their own grey granite sarcophagus right next door, with their names already etched in.) A nearby row of mausoleums looks like the graveyard equivalent of a suburban Christmas display – with each resident trying to outdo the next. The Dodge boys — Horace and John — are laid to rest inside what looks like an Egyptian tomb, complete with a pair of sphinxes standing guard. Next door stands Mathilda Dodge Wilson’s art deco mausoleum. It’s not surprising that the one-time owner of Meadowbrook in Rochester would have such an elegant crypt. It’s a tall, very vertical structure with beautifully sculpted reliefs on the doors."
cool thanks for the additional info. we may have to go visit john and horace then. is this a safe area or do we need to pack some heat while we pay our respects. sounds like some thing fun to do during the dream cruise week.
Henry's buried off of Joy Rd...just east of the Southfield fwy...next to what used to be the Herman Gardens Housing projects...they are torn down now....always shocked me that he wouldn't have been buried at Greenfield Village or at Fairlane.
Palmer Woods is one of the " best" places to live in the city...still some beautiful homes in there and the neighborhood has a strong group that keeps things up....as for heat....if ya got it...never hurts to be prepared
i have heard rumors that woodward signs can be purchased from the city. too many were being stolen so they have them as souvenirs for sale. i would like one for my drive way.
I grew up in Royal Oak and put many miles on many cars without ever leaving Woodward. (once put 360 miles on my buddies dad's '60 Ford, 4door on a Sunday afternoon/evening. Boy was he pissed! We never went North of Square Lake (19 Mile) or South of 10 Mile. (The typical cruise route) Buzz the Tote (Totem Pole Drive-in) on the South end and Ted's (Trailer) up North. And just to piss of the Ted's squawk box order taker, we would order a Big Boy.(the other 'must p*** through spot at Normandy (13 1/2 mile). Given the time frame of this photo and the trees, I would think it is North of Birmingham between Big Beaver and Long Lake (16 and 18 mile roads). But, it could be Photo Shopped 'cuz DeLorean and Pontiac had that stuff long before we did. BTW, Pontiac headquarters was only a couple of miles from Woodward and Square Lake.
Congrats on your son getting what has to be his dream job. It sounds like you guys are in for a great scavenger hunt of hot rod history. Have a great time.
I agree this has to be an altered photo...the signage puts it south of 8 mile....but the rise in the road puts it north of maple. There wouldn't be a sign for the lodge freeway out that way....hmmmm did they have photoshop back then?
Its Down by Square Lake Rd. Their turning from the north bound side to south bound Woodward. If you go down there, you will see that Woodward has a dip. as seen in the phot of the ad. Its right by where Ted's Drive in use to be.
I agree, it probably is near Square Lake Rd. However, I don't think the car is on Woodward. I think it is on Square Lake and the signs are directing you to Woodward and I-75 as part of making a "Michigan" left turn from Square Lake Rd. Google that intersection and check some of the "street views" of turn-arounds in that area. Square Lake has trees and a rise in the road.
Did a little more investigation and I think the car is on Woodward at the turn-around just south of Square Lake Rd. It appears back then the sign showed how to get from southbound Woodward to northbound but nowadays the sign shows how to get to Sq. Lake Rd. as part of a Michigan left turn. Also, in 1970, the business route became 24 instead of 10. https://www.google.com/maps/@42.602...ata=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1swFihuageCKAuMTN2tZ-3Xw!2e0
is that a safe place to take some pics during the day. my son thinks that location might be in the hood. even if it is i think i still want some pics of our cars there.
The area of the Google street view is safe and not in the hood. It is in Troy about 8 miles north of the Detroit city limits. Woodlawn Cemetery area is not the best. It is across from the old State Fair grounds and I've gone to many car shows and swap meets there. The grounds closed a number of years ago and I haven't been in that area since. Not sure how bad it is now.
I grew up around there in the 50's & 60's. If you happen to go there be sure you come armed and with a small posse. Not the safest place anymore. I agree with the posters that mention it's near Square Lake Rd. The gr***y area in the background & the I-75 sign was the giveaway to me.
We will arrive prepared. We own plenty of sig sauer fire power. And we know how to use it. Im thinking we wont stick around long enough to have any problems. I used to work on a squad in the arm pit of milwaukee. The norffe side. I know how things work.
During the daytime in the city just be aware of your surroundings. Posses and heat give me a break. Did alot if work around Detroit and never hs d as issue.
Their was an adverti*****t with a radical Challenger in it. I can't remember if its a tire ad, or not. If I recall, it was taken in the same area as the GTO photo. The Challenger was white, with multi color stripes all around the car. And a real. unusual grill. If any body knows the ad and can post it. I found the car, it was the Sonic Cuda.
Yeah not the best area....but way better now that the ripped the Herman Gardens Housing projects down...
my kid found some old abandon plant in the city and took a unguided tour of what little was left. said it was were the six pack cars were made. the a-12 bees and runners. seems like there is still a lot of history still around. does ant one know of other cool historical places
