I have a radio from a 54 GMC Suburban & it doesn't say on the outside if it was 6 or 12 volt, anybody know for SURE??? Thanks!!
If it truly is ***led as a '54 its a 6 volt...or if its a 1st series '55[looks same] its 12..... from a 54 GMC Suburban & it doesn't say on the outside if it was 6 or 12 volt, anybody know for SURE??? Thanks!![/quote]
Glad you posted, because I had a 54 Suburban and it was 6 volt, but they did change in 1955 to 12 volt so I hope there is some other way to tell.
It's the last of the body style b4 the 55 run, so if I understand you the older body style is 6v & the 55/newer is 12? The truck is long gone but I still have the generator, coil, gauges & none of them say 6 or 12 volt on them so I was guessing 6 volt. Reason I am researching this is I have a Motorala radio from this truck & am trying to verify voltage b4 smoking it. Thanks
All the stuff from when they first switched over was marked 12V if it was 12v, or not marked if it was 6V. Think about it....if it was 6v it was normal, but if it was 12v it was new magic stuff and they had to warn folks.
Squirrel has it right - if it's 12 V, it'll be marked ... GMCs had 12 V systems as an option for years as well. I remember a factory 6 V '56 100 pickup, hard to believe as that is ... must have been special order ??? 1955 GMCs can be 6 V or 12 V, + or - grd. 302
