does anybody got any pic were the spring goes on the transmission on a 3 speed stick a guy took the transmission out and don't remember were the spring goes there is a bracket that should bolt some were i think it goes on the top arm but not shure
what year is it some Buicks have a Selector transmission with one main side lever, and a smaller lever underneath. They use a spring and small bracket on the bottom lever.
here is a link to a Pontiac thread I keep around for reference. Scroll down to the 6 bolt selector ****** schematic and it will show you all the parts and where they line up http://www.pontiacsafari.com/L1Garage/ManualTransmissions/index.htm
I don't see the spring and bracket any were on the top arm it has a spot for a spring but the bottom bolt was never took out of the transmission
Just below the schematic is a pic of another ****** with the spring hooked to the main shift arm(there is a groove in the end to attach the spring to) and shows the follower bar. Never seen one in person before. My most recent ****** had a fabbed up flat stock bar attached to the bottom tail shaft bolt and a non factory spring was attached to it and hooked to the smaller lower shift rail to hold pressure on it I ***ume. Who really knows????
That lower tail housing bolt now gets my memory thinking... I do recall a small flat tab bracket on that lower bolt. That must be why I thought the spring went to the lower lever. But, I also now recall that the spring also had a bent-up extension link made from 1/8" thick rod. I can try to see if I have a complete transmission here. If I do, I will take a pic. Later today or tomorrow.
Pics from a dark barn... See the metal link; the upper hook on it, fits in from the BACK of the shift lever. The spring was missing on this trans. The spring would have hooked to the rear of that link, then the other end of the spring hooks to the bracket bolted to the tail housing bolt. Look closely and you can make out that bracket, and the hole in it, for the spring
don't look the same *** the one I'm working on the one I'm working on has one leaver on the top and one on the bottom up front also has in closed drive shaft it is a 1953
You might have the smaller light duty trans. 5 top cover bolts on that one. 6 top cover bolts on the heavy duty one. My pic above has a lower front lever, but is too dark to see. Mine is 6 bolt cover here is a light duty pic that someone posted today, on the rare shifter thread. It's not going to have a spring or bracket with that custom shifter. You will need to improvise if you can't get a pic of your trans type spring setup.
that is the transmission as you can see the bottom bolt will not come out unless you pull the linkage off and never been off
On my 6 bolt trans, the spring hooks to that bent up link first, and the link hooks into the backside of the top lever. Not the lower lever
there is a spot on the top lever for a spring or some thing I can see if I can get a pic to marrow and see if I can post it
I found a better correct pic of a 6 bolt trans with the spring and correct bracket. Your 5 bolt might have been very close to this one. As far as I can tell, the whole point of having a spring, is to help keep the column shift handle "up" in reverse or second gear. Without the spring, the handle weight, and the weight of the linkage, might try to let the handle "fall" out of gear. The reason there is that L-bent rod on the spring, is the L makes the spring go "over center" when you are in third gear or first gear. If the spring did not go over-center, the spring would try to pop it out of first or third gear .
