So I picked up another project. Its another 50 chevy, 5 window, 3600. (3/4 ton). Previous owners have swapped in (at least I don't think this is the original rear end) a open shaft rear end. Can not locate any ID numbers. See the picture, I need to replace some wheel seals and need identification for parts. All I know is its a "ten bolt face" 8 lug, bolt in axle (8bolts). It doesn't fit any 10 bolt pattern I am familiar with due to the two very close bolts center m*** on the cover. I thought it might be a GM 10 bolt, 8.2 BOP but I am not aware of any of these axels being 3/4 ton. Any thoughts? This may be the original after some research, any help out there?
I recall seeing those 3/4 ton models with a short torque tube from the transmission and then a support and coupling to an open drive shaft. So, I think what you have is the original rear end. I do not know it's identifying numbers/name. A GM truck shop manual from that period should iden***y it. Ray
I believe you are correct, the man I purchased from said it had been swapped but I think not....or for one of the same era. Thank you.
Chevy used that rear up to 1972 in 3/4 ton pickups. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...ck=Search_01434_1324594_-1&pt=01434&ppt=C0363
Hopefully what happened is they swapped it for a much newer unit- that would've had longer gears in it. A 50 would've probably come with 4.56 or 5.13 gears
I havent checked yet but it drives out great but......50mph is max comfortable so probably 4.56 as you surmised. Ive ordered new seals etc and will be tearing into it. Looks like I will be hunting for a 4.11 donor. From my understanding that is my only direct swap available. I know many just rip these rear ends out but for now it will work for me. I found a fantastic write up on all things Ho52 at 66submarine.com and thanked the nice chap for the ***istance. Likewise thank all of you. Cheers Rob
I had a 57 chevy single wheel one ton (3800 series) that came with a 5.14 rear like that. I swapped in a 80s Suburban 3.73 rear. The later rears are a bit wider, so you have to make sure the tires would clear the fenders. But if you're content to drive 50, then the one you have should be fine.
Someone is marketing 3.55 gears for the early pickup rear ends; Langdon's or Patrick's? I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
My '51 GMC came with 5.38s in an Eaton rear. I was happy as a pig in slop to find my buddy s****ping a 70ish pickup one day and it had 4.11s. I've heard there was a set of options on a model of 67-72 pickup that would carry a 3.73 gear in an Eaton dif, but I've not seen one.
