Hi all, I've been working on a 1962 Galaxie with the 223 mileage maker six, 3 speed on the tree. It has horrible clutch chatter when engaging the clutch to get the car moving. I'm going to check the flywheel for warpage/hot spots and replace the clutch, throwout bearing, pressure plate. For the life of me, I cannot locate a clutch kit for this car, or really any 9.5 inch clutches. Any suggestions on where to locate this kit? I've looked in all the typical places, rockauto, kanter, dennis carpenter, jegs, summit. If I cant locate the stock 9.5 inch clutch that's in there now, I wouldn't be overly opposed to swapping in the 11 inch clutch/flywheel combo that was optional on the car, granted I'm 100% sure I can find the parts and they would work.
Don't hesitate to put in the 11" clutch, better in the long run to have a heavy-duty part in there that will outlast any new 9.5" unit you put in there. If the flywheel looks questionable you're better off replacing it anyway and buying the 11" unit. Good luck on your search for the elusive 9.5" parts.
Are you sure it's the Clutch? Is the car like most of today's rides, way low in the back? If so how is that done? The Wizzard
Thanks for the quick responses everyone. The car is not lowered in the back, its the stock ride height(on leafs). Also the motor mounts are fine, I checked those out first. As for the 11" clutch ***embly, I can't find anywhere that stocks it for the 223, even though it was an option. Everyone basically carries the 11" for the 292, 302 etc, which is great, except I don't know if it would be a direct swap over? I found a re-manufactured clutch and NOS pressure plate(9.5 inch) on eBay, that's not too badly priced. Its looking like the only option if I want to stick with the 9.5" setup.
One way to look at it. The 9.5 clutch has been it it since new and worked fine till it wore out. Sounds like success to me. I wouldn't mess with it. Here is a photo of my 1 owner bone stock, unrestored 59.
11" clutches came in most trucks that had the 223. Not sure how that plays with your bellhousing though.
My experience with new/aftermarket clutch kits has not been good....most are made in China junk. Stick with Nos or OEM parts, or send yours out to be rebuilt. I'd keep the 9.5" clutch. JMO
I just looked at a Joblot Automotive catalog. They have the discs, PP and other parts too. The order desk number is 800-221-0172, their catalog is in a PDF format and available online. I've bought lots of parts through them, great service and they have more parts than what's in the catalog.
These guys in Jamaica, NY? www.joblotauto.com the webite is busted. Directory Listing Denied This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed.
Odd, but I'm sure their phone still works. Their email is joblot@joblotauto.com. Their main phone number is 718-468-8585.
LOL I got a Chebby that the clutch shudders bad and before I decided to pull it apart I lifted it up and discovered that the rear brakes were stuck. If I could not find the small clutch parts I would not be afraid of going with the bigger clutch. it certainly won't hurt your performance any. You should be able to find the clutch parts you need though.
@Pist-n-Broke - That's literally the cleanest 59 Fairlane Ive ever seen. Its amazing that its all unrestored. Also, really digging the no post. @bobss396 - Thanks for p***ing on the info about Joblotauto. I had already ordered both by the time I read this but I'll add them to my growing vintage part suppler list. Somehow I'm always looking for the impossible to locate part. @ALL - I'm sticking with the stock 9.5" setup. Found an OEM pressure plate on eBay, and worked with Randy at Perogie Enterprises right here in the Garden State. Randy knew the part number of the elusive 9.5" clutch, and had a re-manufactured one in stock(now on the way to my house). Thanks everyone for all your help. Threads like this is the reason I love the H.A.M.B.
Anytime a bad chatter is diagnosed, you must check the runout of the flywheel, both before and after it gets remachined. Try to get a reading out at the outer unused surface, to look for runout problems I fixed one once, that the local respected trans shop redid TWICE for chatter. They never checked runout after resurface. I did, mainly because I knew this was something out of the ordinary. The crank flange was very slightly tweaked, causing 16 thou runout at mid-face. The owner had the truck since 1970, and finally told me he had a "mail order" rebuilt motor shipped and installed some years back. I ***ume the flange got bumped in shipping. I hand filed the crank flange surface, and it's been perfect since.
I was in and out of some Ford sites and noticed that the 9.5" clutch ***emblies are available. Joblot is pretty good, easy to deal with and super fast shipping. Their main parts lines are '28 to '48 and '49 to '59, but there is a big overlap especially with anything 223 related.
