This is in front of my local s**** yard. Makes me want to cry. It's by no means too far gone and I'm sure it's rare enough to sell anywhere for much more than the s**** yard paid. I will be trying to contact someone on site to see what number would pry it from the excavators claws. I'm just here hoping to get help on who, what, where, when, and how this came into existence. Plus, I figured everyone could get a kick out of it. The perfect shop truck! Any pics of others would be amazingly helpful Thanks, Ryan Green
Wow... wood in the door jamb, suicide doors on front too. It kinds reminds me of an old Seagraves fire truck cab. I would be speculating as to it origin....Mack/white/IH?????
Based on the dip in the front bumper and the 2 opening vents on the face its an NJU Model Mack built from around 1933 to 1941. You can post a photo on the ATHS bulletin board (American Truck Historical Society) to confirm. Also If you can get the serial number off the frame, The Mack people at the Mack Museum in Macungi Pa can furnish a build sheet and who the truck was first sold to.
I'm in the Autocar camp. Likely had a winch in the front of the bed. It had an A-frame off the back, used to set utility poles. Probably a line truck for a utility company. The fixture on the roof had mirrors or a prism so the driver could see out the overhead to the back, while seated and looking forward. It has lots of wood still in it, for the doors in particular. I have a buddy that has a '39 that looks a lot like this one, so I suspect it is in that era. It would be a cool service truck, not very fast though. Thanks for the photos. If nothing else score the headlight buckets. Larry
Definitely Autocar! produced from about 1937-1952. This is a lighter duty truck, maybe as heavy as 2 ton, mine is the heavier version.
A lot of wood in that cab. Looks like the doors fell off when the wood in the door frame rotted away. Note that it had suicide doors.
Other than some steel gussets, the frame work of the cab is all wood. Picture is from a factory repair manual for the heavier style cab. I ***ume that the lighter duty cab is very similar. I have added arrows to the photo to show cab mounting bolts
That is a very ambitious project..looks like you are moving right along. So traditionally you would whittle each of those pieces of lumber by hand? How are you making them? I did see a machine that you could feed computer images into and it wood cut wood from the image. Some sort of cnc machine retailing for $5000...ad kept popping up on my screen last year. I made new door frame for my sedan delivery...it was very tedious but I had very good help.
I stand corrected.! Wolfcreek and Windup are 100% right. I should have searched my archives further. Truck is an Autocar UA or UB made from 1937 through the early 40's. Again the ATHS has a photo gallery of over 3100 pictures of Autocar trucks. If you wade through them you hould find an original photo.
With as much modifying as I planned to do, I went with steel tubing, lots of cutting and welding, but I'm more comfortable working in metal. Note that the sleeper is a complete custom, that includes a beltline that matches the cab. I built a special roller to make the shape.
You would be a God for sure ... rolling around with that thing completed. Nice work on the tool fab' too. Love to see it.
My build may not be perfectly traditional, so please keep an open mind. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/wolfcreeks-autocar-build.920108/
first thank you all for your help. the owner wanted 8750 and accepted my customers offer of 7k this was way more then i expected to pay but when are you going to see another one right. i'm very thankful the number didn't scare him off and that hes as crazy about coes as i am because now i have a serious build in the works as soon as its paid in full.
We'll be waiting for the build over in the coe group. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/social-forums/coes-cab-over-engine.283/
Here is one i found, up the hills near Lompoc. the doors are laying in the weeds where they landed when fell off.
that one has the better looking front end in my opinion and i like the small ext cab window. any chance its for sale? the one i am in the process of purchasing has the doors apparently i just haven't seen them yet look out for a build thread soon.
