Hi guys, I have a 49 Plymouth that I'm working on and I always welcome help and advise from all the knowledge we have here. I'm just getting into cars so even the smallest stuff I'd appreciate.

I purchased a disc brake kit and shock arm relocation mounts
    Got dual carb header/dual exhaust
The car has been converted to 12v, I'm putting a new wiring harness kit it
Got the cool HEI distributor, new chrome alternator, plugs, wires

Only problem I had before I started working on it was the 1st/reverse gear linkage was gone or broke.

...have your machinist cut about .060 off of the head while you're at it.

The great thing about taking a slice off the head is that the slight boost in compression is FREE horsepower.

They already cleans and did the work on the head, they were going to charge double to cut it down.

  18. Before you seal the pan up make sure that the rods are in the correct order, as they do have an offset re the bore/crank journal.......they are normally stamped 1-6 from memory........andyd

Do I thread lock or dip the head bolts in oil? I used some rust cleaner on them, they're bone dry.

Kudo's for sticking with the original engine. Sure it costs more but you'll have something different when your done.

Question.......on this 217 motor is there a front seal? There's a huge gap that I don't believe should be filled with silicone.

Never mind its for oil flow for the timing chain.

There should be a small tube and bracket that feeds the chain lube from above the chain. The timing chain cover needs to be centered properly to seal the front of the engine. there is a procedure in the repair manual that deals with this procedure. Several of the bolts for the cover go into a coolant p***age and should have some thread sealer on them to prevent coolant weeping out.

    Had an emergency.....
Have a 49 Plymouth I was restoring. Original 217, a full resto machine shop. Motor with all the parts has about $3700 in it, new dual Offenhauser intake, Stovebolt mini HEI, dual Cater carbs, Cast iron headers, rebuild kit and more. Motor isn’t complete. New sun visor, headliner, door panels, and front/rear seats upholstered. No rust on body, paint isn’t show quality. Have a front dis brake conversion kit along with the new rotors, calipers, brakes etc not installed. New shock relocation arms, not installed. New wire harness kit, started running wires. New Cragar Chrome Smoothie Wheel 15"x7” 5x4.75. I have both front gl***, clean clear ***le, inspected, with plates. The car was running and driving when I got it.

    How much is it worth?
