    Hi guys,
    got a tad stuck with my build ... 30 Model A sedan on 32 Rails,, drop beam front on drums, Flathead V8 mated to T5 box , 1966 Ford Fairlane 8" Equa-lok Axel ...

    Problem is, the car was supposedly complete and OK when I got it but turned out to be mostly junk.... Anyhow, 2 yrs on and I'm making progress , BUT, well ther is always a BUT.. the Prop shaft UJ was bolted in using 1 1/16" U-bolts however the Ford diff has 1 1/8" cups. So looking about I find that in the USA at Dennys driveshafts they do a Dana Spicer #5-7439X
    Which is 1/16 on one pair and 1/18 on the other pair ( external clips), both of which are 1 7/32" wide, or as seems to be common they use decimals for imperial measurements, so its 3.129 wide, 1.0625 shaft side and 1.125 cups.
    Which apparently is also called an OUTSIDE LOCK U-JOINT 1310 BC FORD.

    So problem I have is where in the UK can I get one ??, cos I've tried ordering one from Dennys and they wont ship less than $50 to the UK and the only way I can make a $25 U-joint cost $50 is by ordering 4 sets of Ubolts to go with it ..... So I thought someone in the UK must have some?.

    Sorry for the waffle but just trying to make sure I got all the info down....

    Cheers

    What you are looking for is known as a combination U joint. Your local autoparts or bearing supply house should be able to cross reference a Spicer, Neapco or SKF number in their books.

    A quick check shows that Simply Bearings LTD. might be a good bet to check with.

    My O'Reilly auto cheat sheet shows that there are two possibilities of U joints sizes with 1-1/8 cups for that Ford rear.
    http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/s...model=Fairlane&vi=1332762&year=1966&make=Ford

    One with a 3-1/2 inch yoke
      • Rear Driveshaft At Rear Axle
        1. - Greaseable Super-Strength
        2. - 3-1/2 Inch Yoke
        3. - Greaseable Super-Strength
      • Rear Driveshaft At Rear Axle

        2. - Greaseable Super-Strength

    • Greaseable: Yes
    • Length (In): 3.220 X 2.375 Inch
    • Snap Ring Type: Internal And External
    • Snap Rings Included: Yes
    And one with a 3-7/8 yoke
      • Rear Driveshaft At Rear Axle
        1. - 3-7/8 Inch Yoke
        2. - Greaseable Super-Strength
      • Rear Driveshaft At Rear Axle
        1. - Greaseable Super-Strength
        2. - 3-7/8 Inch Yoke
        3. - Greaseable Super-Strength

    That says you need to first know the width you need before proceeding.

    Here is the list of the Precision (brand) combination U joints that O'Reilly's shows. Again you should be able to cross a parts number in the UK. If this shows up correctly when you open it that is. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/s...model=S10&vi=1060805&year=1988&make=Chevrolet

    It will take some work but here is the SKF U joint size chart. You have to scroll down to the right size and it does show combination joints listed with two different bearing sizes. http://www.skf.com/binary/79-66357/457285.pdf

    Guys, well, good info but unfortunately no cigar just yet..:rolleyes:

    Jim ...Amazon do have the right one, but they don't ship to the UK, and UK Amazon don't list it.:(

    Mr 48 ... It's not quite a combi joint, as the dealers tell meo_O cos it's a Ford fitmant part !!!! I've looked down the link and I have no doubt it's in there somewhere but the last bits of info are not clear enough to make the decision..

    It is a real part number from Dennys. 5-7439X

    Width - 3 7/32 x 3 7/32 (3.219" x 3.219")
    Drive shaft side - 1 1/16" (1.0625")
    Diff side - 1 1/8" (1.125")
    External clips

    And it's listed at Driveshaft specialists with this description.....
    Ford Big Cap U-Joints
    Ford but here is another "Better Idea". Starting in the early 1960's Ford started using a pinion yoke that was just 1/16 bigger. This means only the 2 caps that go in the pinion yoke are .062 larger than all the others. Only those 2 caps.

    All 8" Ford to our knowledge have 1 1/8 caps and a high percentage of 9" Ford Differentials have 1 1/8 caps. Both differentials were only produced with 1310 and 1330 U-Joints. 1350 was never an OE yoke. We do have 1350 Pinion yokes available for High Horse Power applications.

    Outside Lock U-Joints by Series
    Series Width Cap
    1210 2.438 1.062 All 4 caps
    1310 3.219 1.062 All 4 caps
    1330 3.622 1.062 All 4 caps

    1310 BC (Ford) 3.219 2 @ 1.062 (shaft) 2 @ 1.125 (pinion)
    1330 BC (Ford) 3.622 2 @ 1.062 (shaft) 2 @ 1.125 (pinion)

    1350 3.622 1.188 All 4 caps
    1410 4.188 1.188 All 4 caps

    Handy Measurement Conversion
    1.062 = 1 1/16 2.438 = 2 7/16
    1.125 = 1 1/8 3.219 = 3 7/32 (3 1/4 is OK)
    1.188 = 1 3/16 3.688 = 3 5/8
    4.188 = 4 3/16 (4 1/4 is OK)

    I've got some driveline guys in the UK looking but they did not fill me with confidence of effort..:eek:

    Anyhow this is how far I am on with the job

    Looks very nice! I really like the shade of green. Good luck with the u-joint search.

  8. Action Man,

    As a last resort buy the UJ you want via the WWW and have it shipped to me. I'll send it to you via USPS mail and you can reimburse me by PP or however you want to go about it. Start a conversation about it with me if you decide that will work for you.

    I think I would order more than one u-joint if they are so hard to get where you are having a couple of spares can't hurt ... And it won't add much to shipping cost either ... And you will be above the $ 50 minimum you stated

    Hausers. US Automotive. Rodley. Possibly Rock Auto if you can get to the parts without a vin etc. Most of the UK rodshops are ordering in regularly.

    Summit ship internationally.

    You've had a personal offer of shipping from the US. Use USPS (not UPS) international flat rate box - you can get quite a lot of small parts in those - suggest you make a big list and try and get a lot at once, otherwise the continual shipping of parts will eat your budget in no time.

    Thanks for the info and offers guys.... So one at a time I'll work my way through until I get sorted... A local shop to me, errr is local a 5 hr drive to you guys anyhow it's about 200 miles from my gaff , So the guys at Penguin Speed Shop recon they might be able to get me one .... So they may as well give it a go ... if they don't come up trumps then I'll be on to Blue One or Charlie Chops .....If nothing else the encouragement helped cos I'm at that uphill stage in the build where a ton of work seems to yield very little progress....

  12. I know this is an old post but found it when I had the similar issue. Combination joints aren't easy to find in UK but call Geoff Hauser at Hauser Racing. 01933 682500 Best guy in UK for trans, props (driveshafts) and axles. He had what I needed in stock and delivered next day. Great guy.

  13. Here in the states they are know as bastard universal joints. HRP
