I'm helping a friend do up his 57 Lincoln Premiere, its got a stuck 368. He's going between finding another 368 or putting a 429 and trans he already has. Anybody do this or put something else that goes in easier? Anyone have a 368 they want to sell? Will a 58 Merc 383 go in and bolt to the trans from the Lincoln? Any and all options considered. Thanks.
Howza Brutha, In my own opinion stay with the 368. VERY torquey!!! The 383 is hard to find parts for and the 429 although a good mill in its own, is too easy. Paint the 368 up, hunt on E-Bay for an intake and grab a cool air cleaner from Vintage Hot Rod parts or Vintagespeed.com Good luck man. -Oh, and the Y-Block website has info on hopping up one of those as well.
Keep that motor! One in running condition and/or rebuilt goes for about $2500 (with ******,) and most actually seem to go out of this country when they are found in good shape.
I like the 383, but its kind of an odd duck. It wouldn't be a bolt in, but no harder than the 429. As has already been stated the 368 (Big Y block) is really a good motor. How stuck is it? I'd probably try to unstick and overhaul/build it. But I guess if I was in a hurry and on a tight budget I'd go with the late model (429). Just 'cause its there. Wish you were closer, I'd tell you that the 368 is junk and come pick it up.
Unless the car is a serious resto job,429,no question. He's already got it.FREEBIE,Zilch,Nada. It's bigger,so it'll make more torque and HP. And it's easier to find parts. Even if he has to spring for some parts for the 429 and trans,he's still ahead.
http://home.g2a.net/~brechlrl/pages/enginetech.htm You might take a look at this sight and the work the guy has done on the 368. Hard to find anything aftermarket for it, but he has done alot with regular machine shop work.... (BTW, don't drool too much when you see the ultra rare UFab 4x2's intake....it's currently sitting on my '56 368 (mocked up, so far)....hope this helps.... bgbdlinc
hey gonna toss 368 i'll come and pick it up i,m in lancaster may even give $ call me 661 951 1862 john
theres a place in new york state that deals only in old l;inc parts look in hemmings i can't find num but if i do i'll forward it i have nos linc perfomance cams and also blanks can help with some tech questions also
With a FREE 429 and ****** laying around...and a stuck 368 in my car... ...I'd swap in the 429 myself. It may take some engineering and fabrication...but you'll end with a car that you can drive anywhere, and still buy service parts for nationwide. Don't try to break through open doors...take advantage of what you already have on hand!
Seriosly, toss it. It's not worth the h***le, the parts are rare and expensive and you'll get gobs more poer out of a big block. I've gotta pal who's doing the same thing on his Lincoln.
