I just replaced everything on my chevy 12 bolt rear drums minus the e brake. Im not using it because i feel having the two cables stick out the sides of a fenderless car would look dumb. Anyways i just wanted to make sure they will still function properly?...i removed the e brake cable the e brake plate and also the spreader bar that goes between the two shoes(which didnt fit after taking out the ebrake plate). The guys at napa auto told me it should be fine (they're older and seem to be very knowledgable) since im not using the e brake and the parts would just flop around. Just wanted to double check what anyone's opinion on here might be. Sorry i would search the forum but the hamb changed up the site and still tryin to figure it out thanks.

I could leave it in but then i have to have the e brake plate in as well for the spreader bar to even stay in place. Thats why i posted the pic of the stang front brakes showing the front doesnt have any of that and they seem to work thanks ill wait for reply

don't leave either piece in, without the cable they do nothing .
did you put a little white grease on the pin, adjuster threads, backing plate contacting points etc? i don't see any

x2 without the e-brake there is a chance of the crossbar binding or worse dropping down and ruining the drum m'02 tom

  11. studebaker46 is correct. I took all the ebrake hardware out of my 12 bolt , on my '69 Camaro cause it contacted the frame connectors /Caltracks. No issues. I'm running a late model S10 Blazer rear end on my roadster. The crossbar was left inside and it fell out and scored the drum. Take all out.

I left all that parking brake stuff in mine, it's nice to have a parking brake just in case the single chamber master cylinder fails :p

If you don't run the parking brake, then take all the parts out. It will be just exactly like a front drum brake. Used to be the brakes on Chevys were the same, front and rear, except the rear had the parking brake stuff.

I would think they belong there....functional parts on a car are never dorky.

The cables would be hidden by the wheels/tires? No? Are you planning on putting this car on the road? They are a must have to pass safety...at least up here in Canada. (USA's hat)

They wouldn't be hidden by the tires. Yes i plan on driving it. Also I can spend extra bucks on a drive line e brake.

If you are not using those parts, I could sure use them.

  19. Let me start by saying this, it is a very good idea to not run an E brake so that your car will look better. it is all about looks.

If your brakes are properly assembled it won't matter if you leave the e brake stuff in there. Your brakes would function just fine either way. I have run quite a few without E brakes not for looks sake, but quite a few without an E brake and some of them didn't have an E brake because I didn't have those parts that you want to leave out.
