'Having clearence issues between the Vega box and the oil filter in my Deuce roadster with a 289 Ford. I hear there's supposed to be a "short" oil filter that can possibly solve this problem.

Can anyone give me a part number for this filter? I did a search but all I can find is several references to a short filter, with no specifics. 'Need to know brand/part numbers. Thanks!

Yes we have them here in Australia and I know the number for the local suppliers but don't know what a US part number would be. Got a box in the shed which may have a Fram or equivalent US number on it. Will check tomorrow if you don't get a suitable reply.

  3. Chrysler and Ford filters interchange. There is a short Chrysler filter. I think the Fram number is PH-43. Pretty much everything Chrysler, Dodge in the '80's took it.

    Swifty,
Thanks...I found what I need on another HAMB tread. Turns out I was using the wrong search terms.

I can't recall the number either, but they aren't too hard to "finger out" using the catalogs / computers in the filter aisle. Just look up / select a few filters that fit, say 5.0s, over a small selection of Ford vehicles and the "short box" will be easy to spot. Then compare their O rings for size, to be sure. That's how I found the filter for my 37's 5.0. They were Purolators. Someone told me that shorties were used on police cars (try Crown Vics) because they were changed so often that it didn't make sense to use a larger, more expensive filter. Gary

I forgot that, yes they do! I've also heard the stock Dodge filters are far better than aftermarket filters, too, but pricier. Gary

I've run the very short one on the sbf in my 27, it was a Volvo filter. But now I run one off of a 5.0 Mustang.......it is slightly longer than the Volvo version. I don't remember the Volvo number, but it can be found in the book they keep by the oil filters at the parts store, it fits most of the mid 80's Volvos, as I recall. It is really short.

I was working on my 27 yesterday and had the Mustang one in my hand, but I didn't look at the part number on it, but if you need it I can look for you.

A mid 90s F150 or 250 with the optional oil cooler has a shorter filter.

Don't count on that. Filters are outsourced and many filter manufacturers put different brand names on the same filters.

Thats what my 94 uses. 1994 F150 351W with optional oil cooler, sometimes they list it as a tow package in the books. It uses the shorty.

I ran into this problem when I had my 302 in a model T. The shorty filter I used to clear the stock frame was a Fram PH-16 for a Dodge. thanks

  16. Screw short filter remote is the only way to go. Put it where the filter doesn't offend anything and run the biggest filter you can find.

Why you should avoid Fram filters.

Can't recall the filter number at the moment, but the '70s Mustang IIs with the 302 V8 option used a shorter filter.
That's what I'm using on my '38 with a Mustang II front end.

Purolator L10101 is 2.75" from mount to tip of filter. Napa 1335 is 2.5" from mount to tip of filter.

Hope this helps. I run the Purolator filter on my Ford powered cars and I can get them at Advance--sometimes they have to order them for me. I can plan one day ahead... but it is a challenge!!

We need some measurements on the other filters mentioned to help compare them.

My old 4L awd Aerostar called for the short Motorcraft filter, and I think my wife's 95 Mustang GT with a 5.0 calls for one too. Don't recall the numbers, but look for those applications in the catalog hanging near the filters..

Also, one of the will fit filters, I think it is Quaker State or maybe Purolator sells a really short and small diameter filter under the same application. I actually thought I read the catalog wrong as I held the tiny little filter in my hand. I immediately thought of space constrained engine swap possibilities.

Just go to Wixfilters.com and click on contact and tell them what filter your engine uses and that you need a shorter one and they will give you the part number and dimensions of the shorter filters. You should be using Wix filters anyway. jmho.

The Police cruisers used a short filter because there was an oil cooler adapter that went between the block and the filter. It was a clearance problem to use the FL-1A filter so they used a short filter, I can't remember the Ford number on that filter

I used the FL2005 Motorcraft filter on my A. It is shorter and it is smaller diameter than the FL300.

  26. LOL I have run Fram Filters since I was a kid and have never ever had a problem with one. I have read a lot of bad about them though. ;)

  30. Wix actually makes a pretty good filter. I can still remember when we called them farmer filters around here though. Used to be that they were cheap and mostly got used on tractors and farm trucks. :D

Then they started sponsoring short track guys and got a better reputation from there. Maybe it was different in other parts of the country.
