I have called 9 insurance companys now, little places like Wisconsin Casualty and big places like American Family  and NO ONE will touch me or my cadillac. I have had my vehicles insured through American Family ever since I was 15 1/2 through my parents plan, then on my own through the same broker and now I want to get some nice classic coverage on my 62 before next season and NOBODY wants anything to do with it, me, or even fill my head with ideas or suggestions.

Why? I'm not 25. Can anyone lend me a hand or point their finger in the direction I need to go to get auto insurance on my caddy? I cant believe it is this difficult finding insurance.

And if I dont have enough to worry about, the caddy is sitting in 1000 pieces and I am working 50 hours a week at two jobs makin money to build the car, and another 30 at the shop workin on the beater. Dont get me wrong, I love it, but I am pushin to have this car ready to roll by spring and I cant even find insurance coverage! AHHHHHHHH

Don't get too hung up on having classic auto insurance. I've always kept regular insurance on my old cars...never had any hassle getting coverage. I'm sure there may be benefits for those who have really expensive rides, but sometimes the logistics don't add up and ya do what works.

Well, if I put regular auto insurance on my caddy then if I am ever hit, the car will be totalled if it leaves a scratch. American Fam goes by Blue book value, and on my car is less then a grand. After dumping well over 5 into it this winter in parts alone, I'd rather let it sit in the garage for 4 more years and get the specialized insurance.

Give a Farmers agent a shot. I have 3 collectable pre-70 cars insured, all on "regular" policies (and have for about 30 years!). My agent assures me that they will cover "Fair Market Value". As long as you have good sound evidence as to fair market value and not a delusional pipe-dream, I think they will treat you OK.

Talk to your current, or any prospective insurance company, about stated value, or preferably agreed value coverage. Basically they'll send out an appraiser who'll discuss with you what your vehicle is worth based on the cost to repair that piticular vehicle plus any items you have of specific value that have been added to the auto. The informantion is sent to the insurance company who will then insure the vehicle based on his findings.

Or you could call companies like Grundy, or Hagerty who specialize in collector car insurance.

I hate farmers. But i use them to insure my '17 T speedster. I finally needed to insure it, as I am under 25 no one will touch me (and had 5 moving violations). I insured it through them with no problem. You want to look into their show car/ tour car policy only.

I am going to be straight up, you are going to have a bitch of a time insuring your car as a classic (due to the number of peopel that have tried to insure thier "classic '66 Mustang, and then use it as a daily driver). You will have to convince the agent who is handling your "case" that the car will be used for shows, and classic events only. There will be limits up the wazoo, and dont get caught cruising it, cause they will yank your insurance and red flag you. Then i can only imagine how fucked you would be...

Get the car insured like any other car, and drive it. In the event of an accident the insurance company should appraise the car for its value rather than for the fucking blue book value.

life sucks, and it is worse with out insurance.

(last month 4 of the 5 violations came off my record, my insurance went from $1,500 per year: collision only to $350 per year through AAA with a full AAA towing/ roadside assitance package and full coverage, that was the best christmas present ever.)

I like your humble attitude, but sorry, you have to pay your dues like the rest of us did.

Well, except for the one's who stayed on mom's teat through adulthood. You don't want to be that guy do you?

You'll feel good about it when you're old. Then you can tell some punk kid to "suck it up!".

    It feels great!

    so:

SUCK IT UP! WORK HARDER! PUNK!

If you want sympathy from me you'll have to send me pictures of your whiny 19 year old girlfriend!

So: you HATE your insurance company, they treat you like shit, fuck you every chance they get, don't let you DRIVE your car - & yet you're STILL using them & not only that RECOMEMDING them to others!!!???? WTF??? I KNOW for a fact that Farmers SUCKS, after running Screwed By insurance (.com) for 4 years.
My advice to the OP is try Grundy or Haggarty. I'm not sure how they handle younger drivers, but if your car is garaged & not used for work trans or errands, they should cover it. NO MILEAGE LIMITS - so cruise all you like: that's what our cars are for.
Hamb-burgular: Don't believe a fucking thing your agent tells you. They LIE LIKE DOGS. You'd be one lucky SOB if farmers paid anything NEAR what your car is worth should you suffer a loss.
http://screwedbyinsurance.com will be back soon, & you can read all about farmers for yourself then.

You gotta be 26 to get insurance from Hagerty and also have proof of a daily driver in the form of another insurance policy.

You do have to have a "daily driver" to insure with Hagerty. In Florida, you only have to be 21 years of age.My youngest son insured his Henry J with them and he was 21 at the time.

yep, gotta have a daily driver so they believe you ain't driving the classic as transportation, in 1970 I had a '62 vette, was paying $100 a month just for liability!

    www.Grundy.com

They will ask for the decleration page (first page of your policy) from your daily driver policy as proof you have regular coverage. They will also want a couple of photos of your car. As it is in pieces right now this might be difficult BUT you can certainly send them photos as soon as it's almost roadworthy.

One thing to make sure is that you get (which I think you already realize) is that you get "agreed value" with whatever insurnace company you end up with. "Stated value" will give you "blue book", agreed valve will give you what you and the insurance company have AGREED is the valve of the Caddy. If the car is worth over 20 grand I think they want a written appraisal.

Grundy is a bit cheaper then Hagerty for the exact same coverage.

any members of your family in the military? if so,try usaa. they downright kick ass, and you can declare the value of your classic car. (no appraisal neccecary) within reason. (i.e. they won't let you insure it for a million, but 30 k is not out of the question)

give it a shot! I pay 167 every 6 mos for 3 cars.
    no shit.

  16. I've had good fortune with State Farm. I insured my 59 Impala convertible with them at an agreed value ($20,000) in 1995 and drove the shit out of that thing. Have had State Farm since 1987 when I got my first Chevrolet, a 1967 Camaro (Can the mullet jokes, please). I drove everywhere from Portland to LA and in between, including driving daily from Sacramento to Fremont for a few months. Never a problem. Have the same thing going for my next couple of cars, too... a 59 Impala coupe and a 61 Parkwood I am putting together.

I've heard bad things about Farmers and I hate AAA.

all my cars i get written apraisals and insure them on my regular policy for that dollar amount, also I put regular plates so i can drive them all the time. classic insurance has too many rules and they can deny you for many reasons if they want to.

Well, I'll enter my 2cents worth........I had State Farm for EVERYTHING for years, they insured my house, my business, my malpractice, all of my cars, my wife's jewelry......everything. I had an umbrella policy with them for another million. Every year, while my Studebaker was in pieces with only comprehensive coverage, they would tell me they wouldn't renew my unbrella policy without liability coverage on STEWED. I would send them pictures showing no drivetrain, no glass, no suspension, etc. and they left it alone. Finally, the day came to insure it. They wanted an appraisal. I got them a professional appraisal, all bound up nice and neat with pictures, narrative, a statement of their qualifications, etc......for 32K. I then told them I wanted to insure it for that amount. They said they wanted another appraisal. They wanted me to take it somewhere, and I refused. After all, they had me on 1000 miles annual. I wasn't going to use it up getting their appraisal. They also wanted me to pay for another one. I refused and told them to send an appraiser to the house, and they could pay for it. It took them over nine months to say no. Their reasoning was that the car was modified, and only worth 14.5K. I took that appraisal to an independent agent, who took one picture from it, said you are insured for 32K, no mileage limitation, just don't use it as your daily driver. That independent agent now handles almost all my insurance, and saved me boatloads of money. I don't have any State Farm insurance anymore.
I also don't have any tickets on my record, either.

Yes I hate Farmers (i think they are crooked and coniving), but they were the only insurance company that would insure me with only 1 car to my name: my '17 speedster, at 23 years old, separated, with 5 points on my record. I did not go to Farmers directly but to a local broker, that really helps out (personal contact can be a saving grace in many cases)

I turn 25 in may, i will probably will be making a bee line to Hagerty or Grundy about 2 minutes after business opens.

The next problem i will have is that my daily is a 1971 MG B GT, and i hear that many antique policies have issues with having a daily older than 10 years.

  21. Guess you're too young for AARP.

I've always insured my old hoopties through just a standard insurance company. Don't tell 'em its a classic or a custom or none of that BS its just a damned old car that you drive to and from.

Now being under 25 is a problem but it would be if you were insuring a Honda or some other rat trap.

you're probably not gonna have great luck until the car is in one piece, and can have a real apprasial done. in pieces, the value to the insurance company is next to nothing.

Good fortune? Have you had a claim? They're fairly cheap, but when it comes to paying claims they're the WORST company on the planet. I have personal experience to prove it (refused a burglary claim after paying on the same policy on the same property for FOURTY FUCKING YEARS!!!!!), but not only that; they are THE #1 MOST COMPLAINED ABOUT company on ScrewedByinsurance.com - at 15% of the total complaints. Do you have insurance - or just THINK you do?

I have been under my own policy for almost 9 months now, but still.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will look into insuring it as a regular car. My daily driver is a bagged 98 s10, and I have an 01 impala that I finally paid off that just sits  Both of these cars have full coverage.

Grundy - gotta be 25 in wisconsin. Hagerty is the same.

I have a few other cars, but the thing I am dealing with is my age. I can add the car onto my exsisting plan, but I dont think it will be what I need.

Although, I could wait till spring and get it appraised and see if that works out for me, like was suggested by these other guys.

  26. Paul, you should know by now that paying for an insurance policy is not like putting money in a bank account. Just because you paid you premium for forty years does not mean that you are not still bound by the contract. There are certain things an insurance policy covers, and certain things that they do not.....

By the way, I have Farmers, have had claims, and I think they are the best around.

So: you're ASSUMING that I wasn't covered because...what was the reason again? You think I'm a liar? You trust insurance companies explicitly? What about the high percentage of complaints on ScrewedByinsurance.com? (state farm is the highest at 15% of the complaints) What I want to know is why are the insurance companies NOT bound by their *contracts*???!!!
The fact that the insurance cartel pays claims *sometimes* is the only thing that allows them to get away with their extortion (well that & their payoffs to the politicians).
