The rough spots will show with the burgandy, lighter colors will hide more. Prep is the key to any good paint job. Looks like you need more sanding unless you plan on running full wheel covers. (jmho)

  2. I'm doing the wheels on my 40 in the next couple days w/rattle cans as I've done many many times. I'll try to remember to take pics. The paint's good on em now, so I'll merely wipe em off with a very wet rag of laquer thinner.

  3. that is a sandal primer, put a VERY light coat of paint [a mist] over the whole wheel and when it is dry, sand again. the "shadow" coat will show the imperfections while you are sanding. even a quick sanding will improve the finish, but if you keep spraying primer and sanding you could get them perfect.

  4. I like the copper on your car. Red wheels have been played to death. Lacks imagination. BTW I dig your car

Rattle away for now , but when you order your new wheels...get them powder coated the color of your choice !

Forget the Vaseline , you don't want any oil or grease anywhere near your rims , bad idea !

  8. I would have sanded them a lot smoother.. at least down to a 220 wet sanding, but I get anal about things like painting wheels.

^^ That looks great. I did this wheel a couple of days ago, quickie just to see how black wheels would look (it was pitted chrome). Have a question: is Brake Clean a bad thing to use prior to rattle can? 'Cause it fish eyed like a sob. I had lacquer thinner right there I could have used but I didn't really care, going with some 5 spokes I think. llll.jpg

Thanks I will sand a little more but not a whole lot more. This car has turned out to be everything I hate.. frustration, money, time and little to no driving. I bought it to drive it with some really unrealistic expectation as far as the work goes. Anything is better than the ugly fire engine peeled paint it had before.

Thanks that color looks great but I don't think I can achieve it with the VHT engine paint. The burnt copper from VHT will look quite a bit lighter (more like gold). I don't like the lighter color with my car because it looks dark in daylight and more blue in garage light. The darker burgundy seems like the best match. I know red has been done to death but that's more the fire engine red.. I know burgundy is common but not as much.

  13. I found this on my shelf left over from the blue truck I posted^^^^^^^^It may be a bit bright for this 40, but I think I'm going for it

Its a 10 ft car... it really is.. hence my photo was taken 10 feet away.. if you get any closer you will notice imperfections in the body before the rims.. they were hideous before. I'll go mental trying to sand them a whole lot more. I'm going to sand a little more and thats good enough.. the tires and rims all aren't even matching.

  15. Off to the beach. I'll do the other 3 tomorrow. I just wanted to see how I'd like the color of my found paint.

screw it.. nothing angers me more than all the shoddy work done to this car prior to me owning it. I don't want to add to that list.

I sanded that one rim in the previous photo and smoothed it with 600 grit after doing the rougher grits and will do more coats and repeat.. this one was the worst of the four

  17. Thanks for the motivation. So glad they're not body color any more!! This is inexpensive hardware store (True Value) paint I got for another car. 2 cans=12 wheels. LOTS of colors

Thanks, I spent most or nearly all the day doing a few more rounds of sanding and primer on all 4 rims. I'm so tired, I can't believe how long this took. I think I'm nearly there? I'm not sure how perfect they need to be....

I'm thinking of checking them out tomorrow after work and maybe another round of sanding and primer.. hoping to shoot the color soon.

Sanding is the worst part of the job, I hate it with a passion. You have that wheel looking slick. When you get them done and stand back and give them a good long look you`ll be glad you put in the extra time getting them smooth. ( JMHO)
Most red wheels you see are a brighter shade, the burgandy should be a good contrast with the body color on your car.

  23. very rarely does any one regret making something come out really nice. more often what's heard is "i wish i had taken the time and [fill in procedure]"

  24. If you want really high gloss, goto the autobody store or eastwood and get the 2-part clear in a spray can, there is 2 kinds- a spot a and overall clear, the spot drys a bit faster. but I have done some motorcycle parts and it can be really good. It runs about $20 a can here. Also use a respirator, and paint outside if you can, don't breath it, or any paint by the way.....

I'm done, they aren't perfect but it's the best I can do given some constraints I have with my house being sold as of yesterday.
Here are some shots after two clear coats. I'll take more photos once I put them back on the car. The last photo showing all four of them is what they really look like. There is a cool candy like appearance from certain angles.
