I'm a 17 year old kid trying to build a hot rod, and I'm striking out when it comes to finding junkyards with vintage cars and parts. I used the HAMB search feature and found a few older results, but I don't know if the yards are still active, so, if any of my fellow Hoosiers know the locations of any junkyards/individuals who have good vintage tin, and don't mind sharing the information on them, I could use the help. PM me if the location of the yard is especially secret. Thanks.
Very few junkyards with vintage tin in any kind of usable shape in the Northern 1/2 of the country. Check craigslist, cl***ified ads in specialized publications such as Hemmings, go to local swap meets, check with any rodders you meet, keep your eyes open as you travel around. There are cars out there but the days of finding something complete and cheap are mostly gone. What are you looking for- it will be a lot easier to find a 60's car than a 20's car, and easier on a teens budget unless you get caught up in having to have the latest and greatest.
I'm really looking for (at this point) a mid 50s ohv engine, Ford banjo rear, and a Model A frame. I've had marginal success with Craigslist, I scored an especially nice '39 Ford transmission for $75 last Sunday.
Where are you located? There is a yard in Modoc (Hwy 36, east central IN) with lots of 50's & 60's cars. But I don't remember seeing any early Fords, they were gone long ago...
It sounds like you're looking for model A? If so many parts are interchangeable between the models 28-29 and 30-31. Nothing wrong doing the Johnny Cash way an A.One pc. at a time the hunt can be a lot the fun. So get in there and have some FUN! And good luck. Roger
place Wanted Ad in Cl***ifieds here. do you use these for craigslist ? zoomthelist.com & searchtempest.com?
I'm from Indiana. Most yards I know of caught the crusher bug a decade ago. Nothing older than 90's in most cases.
I would suggest going to swap meets and Hot Rod shows, and start talking to people. It is amazing how many parts you can dig up this way! How far are you from Indy? I have some friends there who could help you. Tom Culbertson and Naomi Long of Culbertson Rod & Custom.
Model A frames and other frames of the '20s and early '30s are not too hard to find in farming communities, since a lot of them got made into farm wagons, no doubt a bunch of them still hauling hay.
If I were 17 I'd be looking for an early 5 liter Mustang. Plentiful, cheap, easy to get your feet wet in the car building world without going over your head.
I'm just west of Indy, RJP. One of the reasons I'm building this car is to prove that I can build something cheaper than and cooler than a Mustang, such as those that the kids at my school drive.
There used to be some stuff around Constantine, and White pigeon Michigan. I also remember seeing a '34 coupe body out in amish country, near shipshewana. that was 20 years ago though.
That is how I got of my two 37/38 axles, two pair of 37-39 Ford spindles, and wide 5 hubs/drums. One pair of spindles and one set of wide 5 hubs are what I will be running on my Model A.
The search is half the fun. sorry if my geography is way off but look up easy jacks junkyard in Kansas. If I lived anywhere near that place, I would have all the pieces needed for my roadster. 2 videos- 10-15minutes each. HOLY MOLY that place is crazy!
Sorry to necropost my own two-month old thread, but has anyone been to Carter's in Veedersburg? I'm looking for a '25-'27 Ford Roadster Pickup body, and I was wondering if anyone here who has been there saw any.
I can't drop any yards on ya its been a long while since I was up that way. But just out of curiosity why are people from Indiana called hoosiers?
If you scored an especially nice '39 Ford transmission for $75, you're going to do fine! Ever looked at what them are goin fer on the ePay? Keep on CL and try to network with local HAMBers as much as you can and go to your local swaps, you'll be fine, it just takes diligence and patience.
Hey Olds, I'm just down the street from you - lol. I might be of a little help with some contact names if you're interested.
Stash up some cash and check out the frog follies at the end of August in Evansville, has a pretty good swap meet. I bet you will find some needed parts
Hough's in Bryant had some older iron but probably not older than '50's iron. I was there probably 6-8 years ago and it was a good adventure as they let you walk around and explore. Found a good bumper for my '57 Chevy pickup. Even saw a '46 Ford woody with all the wood long gone. I hear the guy has another place nearby that has his really good items. Good luck.
AAA auto salvage in West Terre Haute still has some models A's and some other 50s stuff . Maybe 20 cars . Plus some newer stuff....not sure if they are willing to part with much but they have been parked there for years...probably worth a phone call. 812-533-2800
Hit the James Dean rod run in Sept in Fairmount and Gas City. There used to be a small junkyard in the Converse area that had some 30-50s iron.
