Hi too all I have a 51 Mercury at the port in Baltimore that won't go into reverse. I reckon if the Hood is lifted and the two gear shifters on the column are moved it will go into reverse. I think it is out of sync.It was working fine before it got to the port. Can anyone help out. I'm in England so am stuck Here's hoping
Is the parking brake activated? It might move forward with park brake but not backwards? Reverse shift rod - fell off - broke? Will it go into neutral? Going to need to open hood to investigate
I am close to the port. Could get down there Monday. Don't know about being able to get in though. If you need me to try. Give me a p.m. and I will give you my phone number.
alphabet soup,I'll get in touch with the shipper and see if they will let you in I will owe you big time for this Thanks Neil
You're a great bunch of guys on here, thanks Alphabet soup is going to take a look so my blood pressure is returning to normal
Common problem on column shift vehicles. The linkage gets worn, and the levers jam. You need to get under the hood and pull on the lever to unjam it. Then it will be ok until next time it happens. What happens is, both levers get engaged at the same time. This is not supposed to be possible but it can happen if the mechanism is worn. Not too hard to fix, if you take the linkage apart and build up the worn areas with weld or brazing and file them down to the original shape.
X2 on Rusty. Need to get both trans levers and the column shifter into neutral. Sounds like someone was trying to speed shift without the motor running.
I go into Ports a lot. Since 9/11 they have stepped up security. Anyone going into the port will have to have a TWIC card, or an escort. Yes I know, total BS but you have to play their game. PM me, I might have someone in the area that can help you out. If I was in the area I'd go in and get your car for you, sadly I'm 600 miles away. BOL!
I got a call from Gene ( alphabetsoup ). He got to the car but couldn't get the hood open. He did get it to the point that it could be moved. Another HAMBer coming to the rescue. Thanks Gene...........
Good news right there and a big thumbs-up for Gene. That's why I've always loved this place. There's a spirit of community that transcends even the Atlantic Ocean.
