Ok Workin the bugs out of my now on the road roadster. Fixin a little of this and a little of that and I now have a minor issue with the right head rad hose......it let loose just after a test run up and down the street. Thankfully, it got me in the driveway before it let go. Sure dumps a lot of rad fluid in a hurry! I am using a slightly modified chrome tube and head hose. The mod I did was shorten the chrome tube a bit and yes, I lost the lip at the end of the tube with the cut which is part of my problem but there is no lip on the head housing either and I tweaked the bottom head hose so it points out slightly to clear my Holley 390 carb sitting on a Speedway manifold.....that's it! No matter, to me this setup is weak. To many places to go wrong. I don't like how the hose is not overly snug around the chrome tube and hoping the clamp stops any leaks. To get it in the garage, I reattached the hose and double clamped the top of the head hose.....it held but I don't trust it. Nor do I now trust the other side. What have you folks been using that you have had great success with. I know some of you will say you have the exact setup and no issues ..........but I have issues and I would like to change this out for something more reliable. I prefer a one piece hose for this. Suggestions? and thanks.
Can you bead roll a new lip on the cut end?The hose will cover if chrome is affected, the clamp will then hold.
Thanks. Thought about that but I want to change this setup out and swap it for single hoses like this? May not look as great but I think less problematic? Anyone use these?
Nice looking engine! Bob Drake has some new 59AB in 32, one piece upper and lower, molded hose kits available; $60 less 15% (Fathers Day discount). Might work for you unless they are too tall, head to radiator. Also, there has been a post on the homemade tools thread showing how to make a bead former from some Vicegrips and a thick washer. Pretty cool.
Doesn't Bob Drake stock molded hoses for upper radiator? That flexie looks like a stretch...literally. Is that as long as they come? About your chrome ones, there is a quick fix that is cheap and reliable: Drill 4 small holes in the ends of the chrome tubes, under the hose connections, 90 degrees apart; install 4 round head rivets in these holes. Hose clamps behind the screws will secure the hoses. If the tube diameter is far off, go to your local steel house and buy some stainless tube that is the right size. Polish it, and roll beads from the inside, as suggested above by Texas Webb. Stainless tube could also be bent to replicate the old-tyme chrome uppers that Eastern Auto used to advertise in HRM thru the '50s. Then just use four 4" bulk hose connectors at heads and rad tank. *EDIT: @Hot Rod A just answered all the important stuff whilst I was typing! LOL Thanks for the Vice Grip idea, great one! (easier than making an 'internal rolling device'!)
Thanks hotrodA. So far, I have had a leak on both sides with these tube and hose combo.....kinda tired of it and no longer trust them bead or no bead! I will check out the Drake hoses should this hose not work.
A****er Mike......yes a bit and I'm looking for one an inch or so longer. So here is the Bob Drake hoses. They are curved the wrong way one end....cutting them just makes them shorter?
Also....the drivers side has the temp sender we built into the tube........I'll use it for now until I find a place on the block or water pump to move it to.
You're looking at the wrong year hose. Hee's what you need; http://api.viglink.com/api/click?fo...ww.bobdrake.com/ItemForm.asp...4-cb35ea07290e http://www.macsautoparts.com/ford_m...tal-support-no-script-like-original-ford.html
