What if any speed equipment has anyone ever seen or heard of for these long forgotten motors?
I know that you could get dual quads on the 352 and a blower on the 430 from the factory, but has anyone seen much aftermarket stuff for them from back in the day?

Hell, has anyone ever seen one of these motors in a hot rod at all?

Don't know what speed equip might have been made, but if any were they would be pretty rare these days.

You are probably stuck with regrind of your cam for more performance and basic porting, shaving head/block to raise compression, homemade headers, to get better performance.

Rich Fox actually ran a Packard in his Bonneville Vega, he is on HAMB here and is probably the best to know what is out there.

I also would like to know about a 430 Packard, and if your talking about an MEL 430 I would like to know when the factory installed a blower on these.

Back in the 60's in Salem, Oregon, a guy named Wayne Trobridge, ran an A/A Bantam with a 450" Packard. It was Hilborn injected. About 15 years ago I was talking to him about the the injection, he said he used a 'B' Mopar unit, it almost bolted right on. It was a good runner!

I don't think there is any such thing as a Packard 430, but the V12 had around 445 cubes. Also Packard never offered a factory blower except for the badged cars built by Studebaker at the end.

Edmunds made a head, dual intake & cam for the Super 8 engine and also for various smaller sizes.

    Oops, brain fart.
    Meant 374 :D

Everytime I see one of those boat anchors a 430 MEL pops into my head for some reason.

I recently sold this engine. It was built in the last few years. Parts are available if you look and are willing to work. The engine and lots of other Packard proformance info can be found at V8packard here on the HAMB

In the 1960's I drag raced a Model A that was powered by a Packard v8 that had 4 carbs.

One of PackardV8's engines. You can do it if you put down the catalog and pick up the wrench. PICT0175.JPG

I have a 374+.040, forged pistons, custom ground cam by Mr. Vines. Running 700r4. Works good and Jack did a great job on the engine :)

Packard V8 speed equipment is rare, but I've got aluminum flywheels, adjustable pushrods, adjustable rocker arms, roller, solid and hydraulic cams, forged pistons, custom connecting rods.

I've got an adapter kit to bolt a late Oldsmobile V8 oil pump and pickup to the Packard V8. The standard Olds pump is usually good to go, but there's also a high volume pump for worn engines or performance builds.

I also have probably the only BHJ torque plate and block truing fixture for the Packard V8.

The Mopar B-block Hilborn injection can be modified to bolt on with only a hacksaw and a file. Rich used a Pontiac unit, which is only slightly more work.

I've made a few custom aluminum intakes for the Packard V8 by sawing a Mopar B-block manifold into four parts, bolting it to the Packard engine and then having a very good, very expensive heliarc guy weld them back together, then having a machinist mill the top flat and and the heliarc guy weld a new mounting plate on the top.

Maybe slightly off topic, but how tough is the Olds/Melling oil pump conversion to do on one of these Packard engines? I'm going to be buying one shortly for my '55 Clipper and I'm wondering how much time on the hoist I should expect to swap out my stocker.

Other than the '55 oil pump design, these seem like really strong, well built engines, I'd bet the lack of speed parts and low use in early rods was more due to cost and availability than anything to do with their layout or engineering.

Your in luck. Jack sells the Olds pump adapter kit. I used one on my Packard and it was a bolt on except for having to dent the pan a little for clearance. I don't think you will want to enlarge and oil p***ages on an ***embled engine. But I also don't think that is necessary or important to do.

Thanks RichFox, good to hear from someone who's done it, I've read about it and it seems like the way to go.

For an otherwise stock 332, should I use the high volume pump, or would that be overkill? The car runs great and the engine is a relatively recent rebuild, but when the oil gets hot, I can hear a lifter tick. It's never been bad, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Jack could tell you more about this than I can. I used a high flow pump because, why not? But mine was a solid lifter engine running with open headers on the salt. So lifter noise was not an issue. Maybe Jack will jump in here.

Most times the standard Olds pump will eliminate the lifter tick. Put a good mechanical gauge on there and let me know what is your hot idle oil pressure.

Looks like a Latham blown EFI Packard to me. Ask Jack from the post above. I believe it's one of his. It's just about the neatest motors i have ever seen.

This Packard V8 was built by the southern California shop of Ansen Automotive Engineering in 1958. It has never been installed in a car or started. It has been preserved in a L.A. garage since 1958....
It's up for sale in the cl***ified section. 028 copy.jpg
