eh, not sure if I'm feeling it. The Mickey's look a little too "ProStreet" to me, not enough G***er. They don't really fit the look of the car, which is a pretty cool little build.

  6. Well, here's that car as it ran in the 60's.

I'm thinking 10" slicks would just about nail it.
    The M/T's are 15" tread

I have a set of Radir 10.00/15's that would look killer on that.

yup, they never would have done that in the 60s

  11. Never?
    Really?
    REALLY?

    It was built in '62.
Stretched when they changed the wheelbase rule.
Put in the barn in '69.
The rubber and the engine are the only thing's I've changed so far.

    Absolutes are dangerous territory.

Who cares what everyone else thinks? It's your car. What do you think?
BTW...I like it. Kinda cool in a cartoony way.

  15. Yupper!
Right now it has a 364 Nailhead and 6x2.
    I just closed a deal on a 440 and a 727.
    Scary thought.
I need something to put that in so I don't get tempted and end up killing myself in this thing.

Looks like too much tire for me, and the balooney treaded tires look a little out of place.

    BUT

With the front axle that wide, it NEEDS to have big tires in the back or it would look strange.

It doesn't really bother me too much though. It looks a lot like it did in the '60s. I say leave them, it's accurate for the car and keeps it street legal. That is a cool little car. Good on ya that you're putting a 440 in it! Hang on...

    Since you asked:

    Front's a little too wide,for me.
    Rear's:-I'd like the 10's better.
Nice cars-it's yours,so in the end build it your way. That's the only way you'll be ghappy with it.

  18. Way too much for a Civic, but it'll probably be OK on that skate board.

Your wheelie bars are just quarter elips? I was thinkin' that would work but haven't tried it yet.

Wide front makes it easier to keep it going in a straight line. GM did it on a lot of they're trucks (front track width wider than rear) after the digger guys figured it out.

I love the car-tooney look of it, if you can't keep your proportions perfect make 'em extreme

  19. Looks like the tires in the 60's pic are slicks, and a little narrower... OK, a lot narrower. Go with slicks if you are restoring it to it's '62 look.

If you want it to look like a MPC Zinger, the tires on it are perfect. Maybe some Cragar S/Ss all around and some b*** boat flake.

    Stevie,

I like it. Are you going to street it or race it?

I think 10"s would be too small. The car sits up high enough that it needs a tall tire. All the retro 10" slicks I see would look short on your altered. The 10.5" guys use a modern slick that I think you can get as tall as 33", maybe too tall. A 12"-13" width would be about right, at least 31" tall.

It's a shame the guy that owned it in the 60s didn't know he didn't build it 60s style. What was he thinking?

Probably the same thing I was thinking about that time, build them cheap with what you have... this was a Corvair powered 'field car'... I think you kids call them dune buggys :D :D :D

Some "10.5W" tires are that wide, and you can get them in an appropriate height. A lot of times you can find treaded versions too for the street-legal cl***es.

  24. Lots of ig'nant lemmings here! Guys, like Proenfo and Dave said, he is building the car like it WAS IN THE 60S!!!!!!!! Same car, same axles etc............

I like the hell outta it!

Kick***! I'm glad to see that going back together, this frontend shot shows typical early setups that were used (Glen's photo).
There was no '60's style' in the 60's, it's only words describing that period... early on there was alot of 'run what you brung' and hope it fit within the rules. Later in the 60's as dragracing got more organized and rules became more defined, there were trends that developed as racers figured what would go quicker and still be legal (sometimes).

    It's also an Altered, not a G***er...

I think the front axle first has to be brought in some regardless of what it looked like in the 60's. Bad taste is bad tatse regardless of the millenium. Then look at the rear wheel size.
    Make it look like this.

I think it looks great. I hope you're not planning to replicate the '60s paint job, though; it looks better in primer.

  30. IOf you're after a streetable tire you can get M/T sportsman's in 31 tall and about 12.5 wide and close to 10 wide in a 29" tire.

If you're after slicks you probably can't find a pie crust tall enough to fill the bill but there are any number of size combos in the 30-33" range from about 9" wide to OH WOW.
